To quote a colleague, this gripping mystery has a certain "old school feeling" to it, harking back to the film noir classics of the 50's and 60's. And by no means is that a backhanded compliment, quite the contrary in fact. The feel and look of the movie even helps add to the required moodiness and suspense, guaranteed to keep you on edge.

Yet another masterful performance from DiCaprio anchors this thriller, as he plays a Federal Marshal, who along with his new partner, head to Shutter Island to investigate the disappearance of a patient from a secure prison for the criminally insane. Once they arrive however, they soon discover that not all is at it seems, and the less-than-helpful Dr. Cawley, played by Ben Kingsley, ensures that they never know who to trust.

What seems like a straight-forward mystery certainly becomes anything but, as our heroes uncover layer upon layer of deception and deceit, and the numerous plot twists and story developments will keep you guessing... even until the final scene. The movie runs over 130 minutes, so it does require your undivided attention. But the reward and enjoyment make it all worthwhile.

And while Leonardo DiCaprio was never one of my favourite actors in his early roles, one can't deny that he has become a major acting talent, with brilliant performances in Blood Diamond, The Departed, Revolutionary Road and many others. And this movie just underlines his acting range, as his character goes through every emotion possible, from cockiness, to fear, to pain and sometimes back again through it all.

A thrilling adventure, that's more of a "how-they-dunnit" than a "who-dunnit", it's effectively creepy at times, and is bound to surprise you, like any brilliant mystery should. Superb! (5 out of 5, by Carlisle Johnson)

Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo team up as a pair of U.S. Marshals who travel to a secluded island off the coast of Massachusetts to search for an escaped mental patient, uncovering a web of deception along the way as they battle the forces of nature and a prison riot in this period film directed by Martin Scorsese.

Laeta Kalogridis adapts Dennis Lehane's novel of the same name, with Ben Kingsley co-starring as the head of the institution where the patient resided, while Michelle Williams portrays Leonardo DiCaprio's deceased wife, whose memory haunts him during the investigation.

This Martin Scorcese film is his top box-office opening one, as well as his highest-grossing worldwide movie to date. This clever psycological thriller borrows its main concept from the 1920 German silent classic, "The Cabinet of Dr Caligari"; but any other similarity ends right there! Set in the mid-1950s, US Marshal Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his newly assigned partner Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo), go to the Ashecliffe Hospital for the criminally insane on Shutter Island located in Boston Harbor. They are investigating the disappearance of Rachel Solando, a patient who apparently vanished from a locked room. Dr. John Cawley (Ben Kingsley), the head psychiatrist, explains that Rachel was institutionalized after drowning her three children. And you're on your own from here onwards! Right from the early TV series "Growing Pains", Leonardo diCaprio has been a young actor worth keeping an eye on... but it's only since his comparatively recent role in "Blood Diamond" (in which he assumed our near-impossible-to-mimic Afrikaans-accented-english accent to such good effect) that I have come to respect him as an actor of some stature as well. His casting in "Shutter Island" could not have been betterd, and director Scorcese has set a new high in American films with his work on this one. Even the eerie background musical score by Scorcese's long-time collaborator, Robbie Roberts, is perfect - so I heartily agree with Carlisle Johnson that this picture is indeed worthy of a five-star rating!!!
