UNACCOMPANIED MINORS – a.k.a. GROUNDED – is absolutely marvellous!
“Six kids, snowbound in an airport on Christmas Eve, without supervision. Someone please call security” reads the splurb on the box – and I have to admit that after the opening scenes, I really feared the worst! Boy, how wrong can anyone be?
Yes, there is chaos amongst the children when a serious blizzard grounds all planes on Christmas Eve – and things are not improved by Scrooge-like airport manager Oliver Porter (Lewis Black) when he finds that his own flight to Hawaii is also now on indefinite hold.
However, five of the more rebellious youngsters, led by Spencer Davenport (Dyllan Christopher) decide to take charge of things. Spencer is aided by pretty rich girl Grace (Gina Mantanega); Jewish Afro-American Charlie (Tyler James Williams); no-nonsense Donna (Quinn Shephard)), and “Beef” (Brett Kelly) – a big12-year-old boy, who still plays with dolls! Their endeavours are both very funny and, later, heart-warming! They must find Spencer’s sister Catherine (Dominique Saldana) in order to deliver Santa’s promised gift of a doll to her by a specified time.
Two good lines: “All flights cancelled. Christmas isn’t!” and
“Kids of divorce are more resourceful!”
The jaunty musical score is by Michael Andrews.
Seasonal family comedy. It's Christmas Eve and a huge blizzard has
shut down Hoover International Airport. Among the stranded
travellers, five unaccompanied minors are determined to max out
their holiday by running wild inside and outside the airport.
Without a parent in sight, the rampaging five outwit and outrun an
uptight airport official and his gullible assistant. Joyriding on
golf carts, plummeting through baggage chutes and canoeing down a
snow bank, the kids turn Christmas at the airport into holiday
pandemonium and along the way prove that the holidays aren't about
where you are, but who you're with.
