Sarah Denning is a military journalist with the Army in the Middle East when her convoy is attacked and she's taken hostage. When former Army Ranger Gavin Black is asked by his old unit commander - Sarah's imposing father - to plan an extremely risky rescue, he reluctantly agrees and successfully executes it.
Back in the US, Sarah is livid when she's discharged on a false psychiatric evaluation and vows to return to the Army. Until she learns of her brother's suicide. Unable to believe her brother would do such a thing, she puts her plans on hold and enlists Gavin to help her discover the truth. What they uncover may be the biggest story of Sarah's career - if she can survive long enough to write it.

Taken hostage in the Middle East and fighting for her life and the lives of her students, Sarah is relieved to see an army ranger and his team come to their rescue. She is stunned when she realises it’s her ex-boyfriend Gavin. The action keeps rolling in Lynette Eason’s Acceptable Risk. Gavin’s mission is over but, in reconnecting with Sarah, he realises she needs him as back up. Badly injured, she’s taken to hospital and then discharged from the army on psychiatric grounds. Still reeling, Sarah’s estranged father delivers the news her younger brother has died by suicide.
Back in the States, Sarah starts to put together the pieces of her life and her family together and nothing adds up. The psychiatrist discharged her without consulting her and everyone interacting with her brother believed he was doing better, positive about life. Additionally, a woman she meets in hospital vanishes from the hospital and there are no records she exists.
Gavin is determined to keep Sarah safe and, even back home, she is still coming under attack. Soon, the two feel lost in the mystery surrounding them and confused by the conflicting information. It is a complicated web and I loved exploring it! The ending is clever and satisfying!
Lynette has written a fabulous sequel to Collateral Damage and I can’t wait for the next in this series! Each character is intellectually written, the story is interesting and fast paced and the emotions heartfelt. Christian principles are lived out despite the incredibly difficult circumstances. Forgiveness and purpose are at the centre of this one. I so enjoyed getting to understand Sarah and Gavin better.
If you like a good action suspense, this is one to read! Highly recommended, it’s a five out of five on the enJOYment scale.
