A tour de force of investigative journalism, Killing Pablo tells the story of the violent rise and fall of Pablo Escobar, the head of the Colombian Medellin cocaine cartel. Escobar's criminal empire held a nation of thirty million hostage in a reign of terror that would only end with his death. In an intense, up-close account, award-winning journalist Mark Bowden exposes details never before revealed about the covert sixteen-month manhunt that was led by US Special Forces and intelligence services. With unprecedented access to important players - including Colombian president Cisar Gaviria and the incorruptible head of the special police unit that pursued Escobar, Colonel Hugo Martinez - as well as top-secret documents and transcripts of Escobar's intercepted phone conversations, Bowden has produced a gripping narrative that is a stark portrayal of rough justice in the real world.

A great read

Money. What do you do when you have too much, all of it illegal? You spend over $2000 on the elastic bands used to wrap the stacks EVERY MONTH. Storing it is such a problem that your accountant writes off 10% each year due to rat and mold damage. Your name would be Pablo Escobar and you would be overseeing earnings of $70 million PER DAY. This would be generated by selling and transporting cocaine to the USA using cars and aeroplanes and even a submarine. All of which you own. You would be a short, chubby man who maintains your empire through kidnapping, torture and murder – this is not limited to competitors, but anyone that vaguely threatens you; including journalists, judges and politicians. Oh, and 600 police would be killed because you offered a $2,000 reward to anyone killing a cop. You would single-handedly drag your home country of Colombia into a civil war where 25,000 people were murdered in 1990 alone, and a visiting journalist counted 41 explosions in one night. And no-one would threaten you because you would kill them. And if rewards were offered or bribes put up for grabs, well, you just offered more. In fact, the government would wonder if it was worth trying to arrest you after you arrange bomb after bomb to be detonated throughout the country, for a passenger aeroplane to be blown out of the sky and, countless people were hung upside down in front of you and burned to death. It would take involvement from the USA and a secretive vigilante group from deep within Colombian society to even cut back your vicious criminal activities. But in the meantime, you would remain the richest, most violent criminal the world has known…
