Along Came a Spider (English, Spanish, DVD)

A most enjoyable mystery thriller, made even better by director Lee Tamahori's having cast Morgan Freeman in the leading role. He plays Alex Cross, a detective forensic psychologist and author who, on losing control of a sting operation that results in the death of his partner, opts to retire from the force. However, when Megan Rose (Mika Boorem), the daughter of a US senator, is kidnapped from her private school by computer science teacher Gary Soneji (Michael Wincott), he finds himself drawn back into police work. He is reluctantly partnered with attractive Jezzica Flannigan (Monica Potter), and much of the drama hinges around exactly how Cross sees and interprets the different situation encountered in the unravelling of the mystery.

Yes, there is a fair amount of action too; but there can be no doubt that the whole thing wouldn't succeed quite so well without Mr Freeman. Also in the cast are Billy Burke, Michael Moriarty (formerly of Law and Order), and Penelope Ann Miller.

This is one of the better films of its kind, and one will be definitely missing out on something by not taking the trouble to see it!

Morgan Freeman returns to the role of Detective Alex Cross in this follow-up to the 1997 hit 'Kiss the Girls'. This time Cross is investigating the kidnapping of a senator's daughter from an exclusive school in Washington DC. Assisted by secret-service agent Jezzie Flannigan (Monica Potter), he works out that the kidnapper's real target was another pupil at the same school, the son of the Russian president. Then, after narrowly averting a second attempt to grab the boy, Cross begins to wonder if there isn't somebody else involved, somebody who is more in control of events than the kidnapper himself.
