Movement was formed after Bezil Makombe and Collins Chabana met in
Harare in 1999. They were inspired by the desire to strengthen the
growing movement towards the revival of traditional instruments and
discover and expose talent from rural areas like Shona, Venda and
Tsonga cultures and provide a platform for the expression of
indigenous African culture to the world in an intergrated way.
Through this motivation, they decided to identify people who can be
part of this movement .
Bezil Makombe was born in Seke [Zimbabwe] in 1972 and started
playing Mbira at the age of five. He joined the group Blacks
Unlimited with Thomas Mapfumo from 1990 until 1999. He toured many
countries with the band and gained valuable experience, which was
critical for the later success of Movement.
Collins Chabane was born in Xikundu, South Africa in 1960. He
spent three years in various countries in exile from 1980, followed
by four years underground and five years in Robben Island. He
learned to play the harmonica in Robben Island prison in 1986. He
played with and co-ordinated a jazz band of prisoners called
Collective Sounds until his release in 1990. He later became a
member of Parliament representing the ANC and MEC of the provincial
government in 1994. 2009 he was sworn in as Minister in The
Presidency in charge of Performance Management and Monitoring and
Administration. He continued to be a part of Movement and since
learned to play the traditional instrument Timbila.
