This more-than-two-hour film derives its name from a similarly titled 1992 movie that starred Harvey Keitel; yet according to director Werner Hertzog: this is neither a remake of, nor sequel to the previous production. Here we have Nicholas Cage - who seems to try to outdo himself with crazy-looking hairpieces from movie to movie - in the title role.

At the start of the picture, New Orleans police sergeant Terence McDonagh (Cage) rescues a prisoner from drowning, following Hurricane Katrina; severely injuring his back in doing so. Though cited for bravery and receiving promotion to lieutenant, McDonagh's severe back pains necessitate his being medicated with strong pain-killers. Within six months, he has become addicted to them - and moves on to include regular usage of cocaine and marjuana with his prescribed medicine - as well as anything else he can lay his hands on and that has been sent to the police evidence room! He often shares drugs with his prostiture girlfriend Frankie (Eva Mendes); his father (Vondie Curtis Hall) is a recovering alcoholic... while his sister Genevieve (Jennifer Coolidge) is a fully-blown beer junkie! Also, Terence is not above "fixing" the results of certain sports events on which he has big money riding. In other words, Terence is a real piece of work... though as the story progresses, we see that he's still a very good and dedicated cop, and not one to be underestimated!

Despite its length, the film maintains one's full interest all the way through, and the action is violent. Incidentally, the cast also includes Val Kilmer, and Denzel Washington.

Maybe not the Movie of the Year, but we have seen worse...plenty worse...
Nicolas Cage plays a rogue detective who is as devoted to his job as he is at scoring drugs - while playing fast and loose with the law. He wields his badge as often as he wields his gun in order to get his way.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina he becomes a high-functioning addict who is a deeply intuitive, fearless detective reigning over the beautiful ruins of New Orleans with authority and abandon.

Complicating his tumultuous life is the prostitute he loves. Together they descend into their own world marked by desire, compulsion, and conscience.
