How did the tortoise get his shell, and why does the dog have a
cold nose? All is explained in this collection of stories, which,
as the title suggests, is based on Chaucer's Canterbury Tales and
celebrates the 600th anniversary of his death. But this time it's
the animals who tell the stories, as they travel on their
pilgrimage to the burial place of Saint Francis of Assisi, the
patron saint of animals. The stories are mostly based on the
writings of Aesop, the brothers Grimm and La Fontaine, while some
have their origins in African countries or North America. Chaucer
the Cat starts the journey with a story about a cat and a mouse
which explains why the two were never meant to get on. Other
animals join in the story-telling, including the dog, the tortoise
and many others. One of the best stories is The Spider and the
Turtle, which has the moral: never try and trick anyone, they will
always get their own back on you! This book is beautifully
illustrated and the stories themselves are ideal for bedtime.
(Kirkus UK)
A procession of animals are going on a pilgrimage to the tomb of St Francis of Assisi. The journey is long as the animals meet in Paris and then walk down through Europe to Assisi. So one night, Chaucer the Cat suggests that each animal takes a turn to tell a story to entertain its co-travellers.
