Language is the basic means of communication in the classroom.
It is therefore vital that teachers should know something about its
acquisition, development, possible defects and the ways in which
they may understand and develop its communicative powers.
Peter Herriot describes the relationship with thinking, with
personal and social development and its manifestations in the
classroom. All this is described from the point of view of the
psychologist and incorporates many of the findings of
contemporaneous psychological research. But the author carefully
avoids the jargon of psychology nor does he assume any prior
knowledge of linguistics or psychology. Thus Language and Teaching
should be especially useful to the student of education or those
already engaged in teaching. It is a primer of communication.
