A brilliant ensemble cast, coupled with an excellent script which zigs and zags, and all under the masterful direction of 83-year-old veteran Sidney Lumet, and the result is nothing less than spectacular. Two brothers, both down on their luck and in desperate need of cash, decide to rob their parents' jewelry store, thinking it's a safe option with no-one getting hurt. But events soon spiral out of control, and desperation soon leads to danger.
It's heartbreaking to watch this family implode, not just as a consequence of the robbery, but as more layers get peeled off, you discover there was much more tension simmering under the surface. The acting is superb, with Phillip Seymour Hoffman giving a riveting performance as the older brother, Andy. The storyline though is what sets it head and shoulders above others in the genre. We get to see events from each of the main character's point of view, and that changes our perception of each of them. And as the tension and suspense increases towards a wholly unpredictable ending, we find our loyalties shifting.
Definitely one of the best movies of the year, this is not-to-be-missed! (5 out of 5, by Carlisle Johnson)
Oscar-winner Philip Seymour Hoffman is Andy an overextended payroll executive who lures his younger brother Hank (Ethan Hawke) into a larcenous scheme: the pair will rob a suburban mom-and-pop jewelry store that appears to be the quintessential easy target.
The problem is the store owners are Andy and Hank's real mom and pop and when the seemingly perfect crime goes awry the damage sends them hurtling toward a shattering climax.
