"Real" or not, this book is a light, breezy introduction to the
world the author claims is falsely termed "supernatural"
(everything from ESP to witchcraft to astrology), written by a
believer and mediocre practitioner (with the first B.A. in Magic
and Thaumaturgy) less interested in converting than diverting.
There is little documentation and less preaching: the author is
interested in classifying phenomena (parallels between East and
West, Christian and pagan) and using Occam's Razor and a simplistic
pragmatism to form a scientific-sounding theory (magic uses
concepts and rituals to after the electromagnetic waves our bodies
are constantly sending out) to explain the mess. The
inconsistencies (fortune-telling yes: ghosts no) and intellectual
sops don't mar the effect of this amusing and fairly convincing
look into a work which more and more of us (the U.S. Army has a
Parapsychology Corps) believe in, and the excellent glossary and
bibliography will be useful to those caught in the author's
not-so-magic web. (Kirkus Reviews)
From poltergeists to the latest in parapsychological research, from
tantra to tarot, you will investigate the laws, uses, history and
manifestations of real magic. Bonewits brings magic out of the dark
ages and into the computer age in a spellbinding investigation that
will captivate believers and non-believers alike.
