Ricardo Guiraldes nacio en una acaudalada familia en la Argentina que se fue a Francia cuando el cumplio un ano. Paso los primeros cuatros anos de su vida en Europa y aprendio a hablar frances y aleman. Mas tarde vivio en Argentina, en una casa en la ciudad y en la estancia La Portena, en San Antonio de Areco. Su infancia en el campo lo acerco el ambiente gauchesco. Estudio arquitectura y derecho pero no termino su formacion universitaria. Tuvo entonces una vida de dandy en Europa hasta que se caso con Adelina del Carril en 1913. Fue amigo de Jorge Luis Borges con quien fundo las revistas Martin Fierro y Proa.
