The film is an interesting (and at times disturbing!) futuristic drama, directed by popular sci-fi author Michael Crichton - who also wrote the screenplay.
Westworld is one of three theme-parks in Delos - a realistic high-tech amusement centre of the near future, and at which, for $1000 a day, guests may enjoy any conceivable fantasy of their dreams! In addition to Westworld, there is also Pre-Christian Roman World as well as Medieval Europe. Delos is populated with pre-programmed androids; and in the "Wild West" section (Westworld), Yul Brynner plays an aggresive (though theoretically safe) gunslinger. His costume is almost identical to the outfit he wore in The Magnificent Seven!
Richard Benjamin and James Brolin opt to spend their vacation there. Brolin has already spent a previous holiday at the place - so he knows, of course, that "nothing can go wrong..." This is an essay in what might just happen if things did go wrong! It starts with an android rattlesnake suddenly turning renegade and defying all safety regulations by "biting" one of the guests! So if the robot animals can start to get out of control; how will the more human androids react...?
A lawyer and businessman (Richard Benjamin and James Brolin) take a
dream holiday to the newly opened technological paradise Westworld,
a resort offering its visitors all the thrills, but none of the
dangers, of the old Wild West, which is recreated by supposedly
harmless robots. However, when one of the computerized gunslingers
(Yul Brynner) malfunctions, the two city slickers find themselves
in a battle for their lives. Directorial debut of 'Jurassic Park'
author, Michael Crichton.
