This book examines the mythology of the "goddess of love" from the
time of the ancient Sumerians to the present. The thesis is that
this goddess represents a remarkably consistent personality
throughout this time span of several thousand years, and that the
personality is not "nice." The mythological stories examined in the
book include the well known stories of Greek and Roman mythology as
well as many less well known ancient Greek stories and stories from
ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt. The book also goes beyond mythology
to consider stories from more recent times, including stories from
the Middle Ages and our modern age. The style of the book is
informal, but there are references to primary sources and to
scholarly books and articles.
