All Quiet On The Western Front (DVD)

Running for more than three hours, this is an adequate remake – in colour – of the now-legendary Lewis Milestone Oscar winning anti-war classic of 1930.

The year is 1914. Fired up by their ultra-patriotic schoolmaster Herr Kantorek (Donald Pleasance), Paul Braumer (Richard Thomas) and his entire class of graduating schoolmates immediately enlist in the German Imperial Army. However, their idealistic dreams are soon shattered when what they imagined to be a heroic adventure soon turns into mud, blood, pain, mutilation, and death – the latter not always coming suddenly either.

Ernest Borgnine is “Kat” Kanczinsky, a reliable heart-of-gold veteran NCO whose job it is to help the young men to adapt to their newly-found harsh way of life – and to try to keep them alive. Patricia Neal scores in a small but telling role as Paul’s mother. There are plenty of good action scenes too…and they really drive home the point that war is senseless.

The well-known “butterfly” ending of the original is changed only slightly to a “bird” one here…but the impact is nevertheless the same.

A second film version (the first was made in 1930) of Erich Maria Remarque's story about a group of idealistic young Germans recruited to fight on the Western Front in 1914. Amongst their number is the patriotic Paul Baumer (Richard Thomas), whose preconceptions are rapidly shattered upon witnessing the horror of life at the front. Ernest Borgnine, Donald Pleasence and Ian Holm also star.
