A competent, free-form little chiller that pedals you into the implausible before you can say "Cheese it! the Mafia!" - a Mafia whose sinister masterminds, along with the CIA, can fracture a young boy's life. Fourteen-year-old Adam is biking furiously from Massachusetts to Vermont to see his father. Yet distance and time seem oddly muddled as Adam's head buzzes with family memories and - like tape recordings - those interrogations by a doctor (?) about Adam's childhood. He can remember a time when he and his parents were happy and close, but, after that frantic exodus in the night, when Adam was a tot, things were never the same. It is not until Adam is a teen-ager that he discovers the reason for: Father's grim visitations from a "Mr. Grey," Mother's Thursday phone call, and his own double identity. The denouement seals the accelerating dread, with recollections of gentle domesticity and even some high school humor adding a mite more candle power to light this bike-ride through a twilight zone. (Kirkus Reviews)
Adam's father is in hospital and Adam has set off to visit him. It's a long, cold journey; as he travels along Adam gets tired and. To take his mind off his exhaustion, he traces the events that led up to his father being taken to hospital. He had testified against government level corruption and the family became the subject of a government-orchestrated protection plan. The journey is a kind of odyssey, a search - through the mysteries of the mind. Adam must unlock the past and really rememberit if he is to survive.
