Der Appell an Unternehmen, ihrer "Verantwortung" gerecht zu werden, ist ebenso alt wie aktuell. Bereits seit einiger Zeit wird uber Ausmass und Konzeption unternehmerischer Verantwortungsubernahme unter dem Begriff "Corporate Social Responsibility" (CSR) diskutiert. CSR wurde dabei lange in einem nicht-rechtlichen, weil "freiwilligen" Bereich verortet und gerade als (globale) Alternative zur hoheitlichen Regulierung verstanden. Zuletzt haben jedoch auch staatliche und uberstaatliche Stellen die Dynamik der Thematik aufgegriffen, sodass vermehrt von einer "Verrechtlichung" der CSR gesprochen wird. Diese These greift das Buch auf, indem es das vielfaltige Normenmaterial der CSR-Politik identifiziert und strukturiert und damit einen Zugang zu einer rechtlichen Betrachtung der Thematik schafft.
