Lakeview Terrace (DVD)

This thoroughly engrossing urban thriller starts out fairly innocuously as a placid drama as Chris and Lisa Mattson move into a new house in the Los Angeles hills. The neighbourhood is called Lakeview Terrace and they seem like a couple who are ready to start their marriage on the right foot. But they didn't count on upsetting their neighbour, Abel Turner, played by Jackson.

You see, Chris and Lisa are an inter-racial couple, and Abel dislikes them from the very beginning. The reason for his hatred might seem like plain old racism, but the intelligent and thought provoking storyline shows there's more than just illogical hatred seething under his menacing surface. Soon enough, the tension escalates between Abel and the happy couple, who soon become not so happy, with each other as well.

There are many layers to this story, and while it is entertaining, it certainly does make you think as well. And the performances are all faultless, especially that of Sam "the man" Jackson, who gets the chance to play a bad guy and he pullis it off with such consumate ease and makes you uncomfortable just watching him.

The suspense soon builds to a climax which is gripping and bound to keep you on the edge of your seat. (4 out of 5, by Carlisle Johnson)

A young interracial couple has just moved into their California dream home when they become the target of their next-door neighbor, who disapproves of their relationship.

A stern, single father, this tightly wound LAPD officer has appointed himself the watchdog of the neighborhood. His nightly foot patrols and overly watchful eyes bring comfort to some, but he becomes increasingly aggressive to the newlyweds.

These persistent intrusions into their lives cause the couple to fight back.
