The Lovely Bones (DVD)

This beautifully photographed film displays poetic imagery in certain scenes, so much so that you'd probably forget that this is in fact a murder mystery, albeit told in an unconventional manner, with the victim, Susie Salmon, looking down from "beyond", seeing the impact and consequences of her brutal murder on her family, most notably her father. And she also keeps an eye on her murderer, who lives on the same street as her family.

The Lovely Bones has a delicate pace that takes its time, yet keeps you riveted to the screen. And the mystery and suspense is derived from seeing how the police investigation progresses, with us as the audience knowing who the killer is early on already. And we also get to see all Susie's experiences in this heavenly-like world she soon finds herself in. A world that's beautifully rendered by King Kong director Peter Jackson.

The performances are all superb, with young Saoirse Ronan displaying amazing subtlety and innocence in her role as Susie. Mark Wahlberg, as her father, also manages to put in quite a good performace, better than his usual standard. But the two powerhouse performances come from veterans Susan Sarandon (portraying Susie's grandmother, with acerbic wit and a sharp tongue) and Stanley Tucci (in an Oscar-nominated role as the creepy neighbour who seems a few sandwiches short of a picnic).

Definitely a movie worth treasuring and one that is bound to have you talking about it, long after the credits roll. Brilliant! (5 out of 5, by Carlisle Johnson)
