Milk (DVD)

There can be no "sitting on the fence" when it comes to a personal opinion of Sean Penn. But like him or hate him: one has to admit that he is one brilliant actor! Having already appeared as Governor Huey Long in the very good 2006 remake of the old 1959 classic, All the King's Men: here he stars in yet another political arena, as Harvey Milk, in the true biography of this well-known American gay rights activist and politician. The film received eight Oscar nominations - including Best Picture, and Best Actor (Sean Penn.)

At times violent; often disturbing, one cannot fault either the acting or the production values here. Apart from Mr Penn, other superb performances are displayed by Emile Hirsh; Josh Brolin, and James Franco.

While marking a significant blow for the American constitutional rights, I nevertheless felt slightly uncomfortable at times, while watching it. However, while it is obviously not everyone's cup of tea, one has to respect the filmmakers' dedication in "telling it like it was" without any watering-down or unnecessary apologies.

In 1977, Harvey Milk was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, becoming the first openly gay man to be voted into major public office in America.

His victory was not just a victory for gay rights; he forged coalitions across the political spectrum.

From senior citizens to union workers, Harvey Milk changed the very nature of what it means to be a fighter for human rights and became, before his untimely death in 1978, a hero for all Americans.
