After the thrilling horror classic that was
Alien from director Ridley Scott, this sequel got a new director, James Cameron, and it also received a change of pace. It became an all-out action classic. (The horror elements are all there of course, but none of the claustrophobia of the original due to its being set in one location).
Ripley joins a team of Marines headed to the planet which was the launching pad for her first encounter with the dreaded "alien". A human settlement colony has been built there, but all contact has been lost so the Marines are on a search-and-rescue mission. Ripley fears the worst, and it isn't long before it's Marines vs Aliens basically. Simple set-up, but it's the non-stop excitement and edge-of-your-seat thrills which sets this apart from all the others in the series. Cameron knows how to film action, and there's brilliant special effects as well as a commanding lead performance from Sigourney Weaver (she managed to get an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for this role, almost unheard of in a sci-fi adventure).
So whether you've seen it before or, horror-of-horrors, never experienced this visceral tale in your life before, Aliens is definitely a movie to own. A masterpiece of thrilling storytelling! (5 out of 5, by Carlisle Johnson)
The only survivor of the Nostromo's deadly encounter with the alien, Ripley's escape pod floats in space for 57 years. After being rescued, Ripley is stunned when her story is met with disbelief.
Then all communication is lost with the colonists who've settled on the alien planet. And when the Company asks Ripley to accompany a team of high-tech colonial Marines back to LV-426, she refuses. But she ultimately realises that the only way to banish her fear is to confront it head on.
