Migrant farm workers are still routinely forced to live and work in
unsafe, often desperate conditions, held against their will in what
amounts to a modern manifestation of slavery. In Immokalee,
Florida, the tomato capital of the world - which has earned the
dubious distinction of being ground zero for modern slavery' - farm
workers organised themselves into the Coalition of Immokalee
Workers and launched a nationwide boycott campaign that forced some
of the biggest global multi-nationals including McDonalds and
Burger King to recognise their demands.'
