Paul (DVD)

Another exercise in good nonsense from the team that gave us the delightful comedy-drama Hot Fuzz a couple of years ago. Billed as a "science fiction comedy", it is certainly that...and much more besides! In addition it pays tribute to many of Steven Spielberg's works (e.g. Close encounters of the Third Kind; E.T. The Extra Terrestrial; Duel etc; as well as such obscure movies as The Wizard of Oz; Midnight Run and even The Fugitive; not to mention a list of science-fiction features that would be too lengthy to tabulate.

Graeme Willy (Simon Pegg) and Clive Gollings (Nick Frost) are two English best friends who can only be described as "comic-book nerds". They have travelled to America to attend the annual San Diego Comic-Con international, and are crossing the continent in their RV, when they encounter a small alien named "Paul" (voiced by Seth Rogen). While they are on their travells, they also meet good-looking motorpark owner Ruth Buggs " a self-confessed Christian fundamentalist, and her controlling father . This causes some differences of religious opinion between Paul and Ruth.

To add to the mayhem, there is also Lorenzo Zoil (Jason Bateman) who comes from the same galaxy as Paul; and his superior officer, known only as "the big guy" (Sigourney Weaver), although she is obviously of the feminine gender!

It would be too difficult to even try to go into the story in any depth, and I'm afraid that some people would find the whole thing a trifle sacreligeous! It is not intended to be that way, and shoud be taken with the proverbial pinch of salt that the producers intended. Personally, I think its great

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost reunite for the comedy adventure Paul as two sci-fi geeks whose pilgrimage takes them to America's UFO heartland.

While there, they accidentally meet an alien who brings them on an insane road trip that alters their universe forever.
