Calcium and magnesium are essential minerals for healthy bones and muscles. They also help protect the functioning of the nervous system and heart. Bio-CalMag contains the most effective forms of calcium and magnesium known as glycinate amino acid chelates. Glycinates are best absorbed and will also not neutralise stomach acid, unlike most calcium containing products. Neutralising germ-killing stomach acid can result in infections in the intestine and body. Bio-CalMag contains the ideal ratio of 1 part magnesium: 2 parts calcium. Calcium glycinate is 1.8 times (180%) better absorbed than calcium citrate and is 21% better absorbed than calcium citrate-malate. It is 205 times more soluble than calcium carbonate. With added vitamin D3 for optimal calcium absorbtion. Boron plays an important role in mineral metabolism, by preventing calcium loss and bone demineralisation.

Vitamin D: Vitamin D assists in the absorption of magnesium. Low levels of Vitamin D may thus lead to reduced absorption of magnesium. Biphosphonates: Magnesium and calcium can decrease the absorption of biphosphonates. Doses of magnesium and calcium and biphosphonates should be separated by at least 2 hours. Calcium channel blockers: Magnesium could have an additive effect. Use with caution especially if taking high doses of magnesium. Potassium sparing diuretics: These diuretics are also magnesium sparing and can potentially lead to increased magnesium levels with concomitant supplementation. Quinolone antibiotics: Magnesium and calcium can form insoluble complexes with these antibiotics leading to reduced absorption. Individuals should take these medications at least two hours before or four hours after magnesium. Tetracycline antibiotics: Magnesium and calcium can form insoluble complexes with these antibiotics leading to reduced absorption. Individuals should take this medication at least two hours before or four hours after magnesium. Beta-agonists (albuterol or terbutaline): Beta-agonists promote the movement of magnesium from the extracellular to the intracellular space, and increase the excretion of magnesium in the urine. Corticosteroids :Corticosteroids increase urinary magnesium excretion. Calcipotriene: In combination with calcium it can increase the risk of hypercalcaemia. Digoxin: Hypercalcaemia can increases the risk of fatal cardiac arrhythmias. Diltiazem and verapamil: Hypercalcaemia reduces their effectiveness in atrial fibrillation. Levothyroxine: Calcium reduces levothyroxine absorption and they should be taken at least four hours apart. Sotalol: Calcium reduces sotalol absorption and the combination should be taken at least four hours apart. Thiazides: Thiazides reduce calcium excretion by the kidneys. Taking high doses of calcium with thiazides increases the risk of milk-alkali syndrome. Medications that reduce calcium in the body include: aluminium salts, antiepileptics, cholestyramine, corticosteroids, loop diuretics, mineral oil, proton pump inhibitors, stimulant laxatives, high caffeine intake.
