Later, she tuned into the world of musical suffering, tuned out of her earlier liveliness and wholehearted well-being. The late Coleman Hawkins blows a straightfaced macabre humor while Count Basie bounces with wit. Asked what swing is, Basle replies that it's "a matter of some good things put together that you can really pat your foot by."
