In her golden days Billie Holiday liked to swing: "I jumped out of
the frying-pan right into the fire,/ Lost me a cheap man and got a
no-'count liar." Later, she tuned into the world of musical
suffering, tuned out of her earlier liveliness and wholehearted
well-being. Most of the 40 musicians interviewed in this book pass
through several eras while retaining their originality. Trumpeter
supreme Roy Eldridge is most amusing about the birth of the cool,
whispery drumming style of the late '40's and how he had to beg his
young drummer to give him a solid beat to riff against. The late
Coleman Hawkins blows a straightfaced macabre humor while Count
Basie bounces with wit. Asked what swing is, Basle replies that
it's "a matter of some good things put together that you can really
pat your foot by." Dance says that it's "an exhilarating rhythmic
feeling created around a fundamental pulse that suggests - but does
not actually realize - a quickening of tempo." (Rock does not
swing.) About minor masters as well as giants, and damned funny
too, this is Volume I of what is already a deep-focus look at swing
and promises to be "a gassuh," as Satchmo says. More, please!
