Get Smart (DVD)

This modern-day adaptation of the classic 70's comedy series is bound to be hit and miss for some. If like me, you loved the original TV series, you might find lots to criticize about this big-screen adaptation, the most obvious point of irritation being that Steve Carell just doesn't have that same comedic style of Don Adams. Carell is basically playing his standard "loser with a heart of gold who can turn on the charm" schtick. Adams on the other hand was magnificent, portraying Maxwell Smart as a true idiot who knows no better.

Suffice it to say, if you've never seen any episodes from the seminal TV series, you will probably be very entertained by this action-packed comedy. I must admit, there were a couple of laugh-out-loud moments to be had, courtesy of the glorious supporting cast, who are all in fine form. (By Carlisle Johnson)

Maxwell Smart is on a mission to thwart the latest plot for world domination by the evil crime syndicate known as KAOS. When the headquarters of U.S. spy agency CONTROL is attacked and the identities of its agents compromised, the Chief has no choice but to promote his ever-eager analyst Maxwell Smart, who has always dreamt of working in the field alongside stalwart superstar Agent 23.

Smart is partnered instead with the lovely-but-lethal veteran Agent 99. Given little field experience and even less time, Smart - armed with nothing but a few spy-tech gadgets and his unbridled enthusiasm - must thwart the doomsday plans of KAOS head Siegfried.
