ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL FOR ALL STUDENTS SEEKING BASIC SUPPORT & BENEFITS INFORMATION IN 21st CENTURY An appreciation by Elizabeth Robson Taylor of Richmond Green Chambers and Phillip Taylor MBE, Head of Chambers and Reviews Editor, “The Barrister” We live in an age when publications from the Child Poverty Action Group (CPAG) are considered with the highest regard from users of their prestigious handbooks covering all levels of knowledge. CPAG’s new “Student Support and Benefits Handbook” for the year 2017-2018 remains the definitive, up-to-date practical guide to financial support for students in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It is a publication which all students today should be familiar with. As before, the CPAG have produced this excellent work in conjunction with the National Union of Students (NUS) to explain in detail what benefits are available at a time of constant change. The Foreword has been written by Shakira Martin and Izzy Lenga from the NUS and should be your starting point before you read the section on how to use the handbook. Martin and Lenga say that the handbook is “no silver bullet”. They continue with a warning that “if the government seriously wishes to eradicate child poverty, education must be a priority”. The reality is that higher education certainly has become more of a political priority. Therefore, good advice becomes critical and no-more so than in higher education. Major issues which remain at the forefront of the action agenda include the following: fairer access to student support; increased capacity in the student advice sector; further development in childcare services; continued, far-reaching change in some of our older and larger educational institutions; a raising of aspirations and achievement in schools in disadvantaged areas; and more resources channeled into our community support services. Such a list does not, of course, remain unattainable if the requisite will is there to deliver change. This excellent Handbook will give the reader some hope for the future as we continue the transition to much more widely-available higher education for all towards the middle of the century. We are sure that these CPAG handbook titles will be with us for a long time to come because there are no short-term solutions. The new edition is fully updated for the 2017/18 academic year and contains all the latest rules on students' entitlement to benefits and tax credits, including universal credit. As all users of CPAG publications will know, there is a useful summary of information throughout the work. There are detailed tables and step-by-step guides which have been included by the authors to help assist with calculating benefit entitlement in the light of student income. The book was published on 12th October 2017 for the current academic year. Always ensure that you refer to the most recent edition for advice.
