This latest installment in the John Rambo saga might have seemed like one of the dumbest ideas to come out of Hollywood, especially when you consider that Stallone is now 62 years old. So with some trepidation I approached this film, only out of a certain loyalty, because I grew up as a child watching the previous adventures. And my verdict after seeing this: It absolutely rocked!
Moving away from the recent crop of "bullet-time" and unrealistic action movies, Stallone (who also directs) takes us back with an old school action style. Pure muscle and firepower. And this movie outdoes any Rambo film which came before. The villians are meaner, the body count is higher and the deaths are bloodier. This has to be one of the most violent action movies out there, so if you're not into numerous flying limbs, decapitated heads and bodies getting blown to bits (literally), then steer clear.
As for the rest of you, if you're in the mood for a classic Hollywood action movie of good guys taking on the bad guys, then this is definitely a good choice. Credit must be given to Stallone who stuck to his guns, even though many ridiculed his plans to resurrect two of his most famous characters. And now? His last two movies, Rocky Balboa and now Rambo have both been a most welcome 'blast from the past', enjoying phenomenal success at the box office, against all odds. Welcome back, Sly. (4 out of 5, by Carlisle Johnson)
Rambo has withdrawn away from his dangerous life to a simple and secluded existance in Thailand where he spends his time chauffering locals up the river in his old PT boat. Despite trying his best to avoid trouble he is recruited by missionaries who are travelling up river to help the oppressed local people against the brutal rule of the murderous Burmese military. After witnessing a sadistic raid by Major Pa Tee Tint in which many locals are tortured and murdered the missionaries plead with Rambo to help their cause of liberating the survivors. Unable to stay behind he joins with them in what may be his deadliest mission ever.
