"I look forward to dictating the peace to the United States of America in the White House" Admiral Yamoto, Commander in Chief, Japanese Navy.
However the US Navy Intelligence Unit had cracked Japan's secret code and American warships intercepted the Japanese naval assault force on Midway Island. The Japanese force was a formidable one, 86 warships, including 4 aircraft carriers. Four times, American aircraft attacked the Japanese ships in vain, 65 aircraft being shot down. But the 5th attack, made with 54 dive-bombers during the morning of 5th June was successful.
Three of four Japanese Carriers, Akagi, Kaga and Soryu were sunk. That same afternoon the 4th Carrier, Hiryu, was destroyed, but not before her own aircraft had badly damaged the American Carrier Yorktown, which was sunk by a Japanese Submarine on June 6th.
The Battle of Midway was a disaster for the Japanese, losing 4 aircraft carriers, a cruiser, 352 aircraft and 3500 men where as America lost only 1 aircraft carrier, 1 destroyer, 150 aircraft and 305 men.
