THE VILLAGE CHURCH. A little lonely church in days of yore, For so they say, these books of ours. The Holy Grail. pNSCOMBE CHURCH, both for architecture and situation, is one of the most beautiful of the many fine churches in Somersetshire. It stands on the north side of a green knoll of Wavering Down, and is a picturesque object from every point of view, the picture being completed by the grand old yew-tree in the churchyard, and the harmonious view and surroundings. The variety of form in the church, the tower and northern porch, and the warm and varied hues of the stone, please the painter as well as the architect. Few scenes of the kind can surpass the view of Winscombe church and its yew-tree, when, on a moonlight evening -- The silver light which, hallowing tree and tower, Sheds beauty and deep softness o'er the whole. The architecture of the church, perpendicular Gothic, has puzzled some Archaeologists, who find difficulty in reconciling the style of the building with its reputed date: for it is stated on the best authority that Wins- combe Church was rebuilt from the ground by Bishop See Visitor's Handbook to Weston-super-Mare. A very interesting and valuable book, which I have found useful in revising these Sketches, Ralph de Salopia, who died in 1363. The architecture of the present church is that of a century later, and very similar to that of Banwell, which is attributed to Bishop Beckington, about 1450. Recent discoveries may explain this discrepancy. My friend Mr. Yatman informs me that in rebuilding the chancel in 1864, some remains were found, consisting of ...
