Blockbuster movie adaptation of the Marvel comic strip. When
high-school student Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) is bitten by a
genetically-altered spider while on a visit to a scientific
institute, he soon begins to experience unusual side-effects - such
as increased strength, enhanced wall-climbing skills, and the
ability to spin webs out of his wrists. Peter first attempts to
make use of these skills to impress girl-next-door Mary Jane Watson
(Kirsten Dunst), but after his Uncle Ben is killed in an armed
robbery, he is compelled to work for the greater good and reinvents
himself as Spider-Man, the enemy of criminals everywhere.
Meanwhile, arms manufacturer Norman Osborn (Willem Dafoe)
transforms himself into the Green Goblin, begins to terrorize the
city, and lays down the gauntlet to Spider-Man by abducting his
beloved Mary Jane.

Spider-Man

Over the years, Marvel Comis' artist, Stan Lee, has created many comic-book characters – both good and bad – but none of the others have achieved the fame of Spider-Man (or “Spiderman,” as it is sometimes written.) He's no longer simply a two-dimensional cartoon character; but a complete industry on his own – with T-shirts, toys, video games, movies, animated short features, and many other entities that have Stan Lee to thank, for their sure-fire success. This film is the first of the series...and possibly the best. It tells of how a nerdy student – Peter Parker (Tobey McGuire) – is bitten by a mutant spider while on a field trip, and, overnight, develops fantastic strength, agility, hearing and speed, etc – all of which he devotes in the interests of maintaining law and order, while disguised in a blue and red “Spiderman” costume! He, and his best friend, James Osborn (James Franco,) are after the same girl, Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst;) while James' father, Harry Osborn (Willem Dafoe) is a boffin, whose inventions he is trying to sell to the US Military. Following an experiment that went wrong, Harry also develops super-strength...but turns to crime while in the grotesque guise of “The Green Goblin.” Inevitably, Spider-Man and the Green Goblin must clash in a fight to the finish. Cliff Roberson has a minor role as Ben Parker, Peter's guardian and uncle. Stan Lee nearly called this picture “How Green was my Goblin,” but was talked out of it by Columbia Pictures' executives. Danny Elfman's musical score alone is worth seeing the movie for!
