As sixth in the Lindsay Gordon series this book doesn't disappoint. For those unfamiliar with the novels, Lindsay is a freelance journalist whose tough facade and stubborn, opinionated character lead her into exciting and dangerous territory. But her nose for a story is not what lands her at the scene of a cold-blooded crime this time, it's her lack of cash. Whilst covering a public school's fundraising gala, with the intention of not only seeing how the other half live but making some extra money, she becomes embroiled in a vicious murder for which her friend, Paddy, a teacher at the school, is arrested. Lindsay and her new lover Cordelia investigate, in order to exonerate Paddy and they uncover more than they bargain for as the victim turns out to have been less than popular. The book is an intriguing story, up to McDermid's usual high standard, with brilliant characterisations and devilish twists. (Kirkus UK)
