Top Secret (DVD)

For those who appreciate really crazy comedy: this one's for you! Made as far back as 1984 and in similar vein to the delightful spoof comedies of a few years back that featured mainly Leslie Nielsen, this was Val Kilmer's first feature movie! Also starring Peter Cushing; Lucy Gutteridge; Omar Sharief; Michael Gough, and Jeremy Kemp: the story is a truly funny yarn about an American pop singer, Nick Rivers (Kilmer) who goes to East Germany to perform in a cultural festival. While there, he becomes involved with the resistance movement, with whom he helps beautiful Hillary Flammond (Gutteridge) to rescue her brilliant scientist father (Gough) from the Germans.

The entire resistance movement is, of course, made up entirely of Frenchmen – with names like Cruisant; Le Trine; Du Quios; a black fellow, Chocolate Mousse; and Deja Vu (who, on being introduced, asks Rivers: "Haven't I met you someplace before?"). And there are also sight-gags galore. For example: a drive through the crowded city streets suddenly becomes a graphic Pac-Man game! And there are also funny tributes – many not-too-subtle – to well-known movies. Why, even The Wizard of Oz hasn't been forgotten! And don't go to sleep during the end credits either! There is much humour to be gleaned there as well.

Somewhat surprisingly for a movie in which the hero is a pop-music artist, the musical score is by the great Maurice Jarre.
(Footnote: Eleven years later, in 1995, Val Kilmer and Michael Gough were to star together again – as Bruce Wayne and Alfred respectively – in Batman Forever.)

If you were sitting around wondering if the guys who brought you Airplane! and The Naked Gun are crazy, the answer is "yes." And Top Secret! proves it beyond a shadow of a doubt!

Top Secret! pits American rock star Nick Rivers against the dreaded East German High Command. It's a race against time as Nick teams up with Hillary Flammond to find her father before he can create the ultimate super weapon - the Polaris Mine.

Along the way, Top Secret! manages to do for war epics and Elvis films what Airplane! did for disaster movies.
