The collection Quartin salutes Roberto Quartin, the visionary
behind several of Brazil's best-kept-secret labels of the 1960s and
'70s. This one focuses on his eponymous label of the '70s, which
released intriguing, distinctive work by Jos‚ Mauro, Victor Assis
Brasil, and Piri. The inclusions of Mauro and Piri are moody
Brazilian pop (in a league with few other than Caetano Veloso),
while Brasil's work -- the entirety of his Plays A.C. Jobim tribute
LP -- focuses on exploratory jazz, with solid tenor solos. After
getting new records out of '70s pop phenomenon Marcos Valle, once
again the Far Out label has done a service to fans of Brazilian
pop, and those who like individual selections are recommended to
search out reissues of the original LPs by Mauro and Piri. ~ John
