Will Smith was deservedly nominated for a “Best Actor” Oscar for his performance here. He portrays true-life character Chris Gardner – a man who proved to the world that you don’t need either a good background or lucky breaks if you’re determined to make a success of your life. Start with a dream…and dedication, coupled with selfless hard work will see you right every time. (“Protect your dreams!” he tells his young son, Christopher, “and don’t let anybody tell you that you can’t do something – not even me!”)

Chris starts off with nothing. His wife walks out on him; he loses his car and his home, and he still has his young son (played by Will Smith’s real son, Jaden) to take care of. He might be down, but he’s by no means out. Securing a position with a stockbrokerage firm, he then proceeds to roll up his sleeves and show his bosses and colleagues what he’s really made of!

It’s by no means easy going for him…but the fact that he finally gets to head up his own billion-dollar enterprise speaks volumes in itself!

When his girlfriend Linda (Thandie Newton) walks out, Chris is left to raise their 5-year old son Christopher (Jaden Smith) on his own. Chris' determination finally pays off when he lands an unpaid internship in a brutally competitive stockbroker-training program, where only twenty interns will make the cut. But without a salary, Chris and his son are evicted from their apartment and are forced to sleep on the streets, in homeless shelters and even behind the locked doors of a metro station bathroom. With self confidence and the love and trust of his son, Chris Gardner rises above his obstacles to become a Wall Street legend.
