18. But I say, Have they not heard? Yes, verily, their sound went
into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world. The
argument employed by the Apostle, in connexion with this passage,
is twofold. First, that the Gentiles are included with the Jews in
the Covenant of salvation; therefore, that in preaching the Gospel
to them, however contrary to the prejudices of his countrymen, he,
and his illustrious colleagues, were not only acting in obedience
to the express commission of their Great Master, but in conformity
to the revealed will of God, as exhibited in a variety of
predictions and promises, not merely of a general character, but
distinctly, and by name, referring to the Gentiles. Secondly, that
it was not only the right of Gentile nations to hear the Gospel;
but that they had actually, to a considerable extent, been made
acquainted with it. " But I say, Have they " not heard ? Yes,
verily, their sound went into " all the earth, and their words unto
the ends " of the world." The allusion appears to be partly to the
rapid and extensive progress of Christianity so soon after it's
first propagation; so that even our native country heard the glad
tidings in those early ages partly to that traditional knowledge of
the most important facts and doctrines of revelation, which we can
yet trace in all the systems of religion that have ever existed,
notwithstanding the corruptions, superstitions, and idolatry, with
which they are mingled, by which they are obscured, and under which
they are buried and partly to that universal testimony borne by the
works of God to his existence and attributes; and which ought to
