One of the major challenges in Nigeria since independence in 1960
has been human rights violations. During military rule, the problem
was attributed to the undemocratic nature of military regimes. When
the military handed over power to civilians after a democratic
election in 1999, it was expected that democratic governance would
lead to improved respect for human rights. Nevertheless, human
rights violations persisted. The character of Nigeria's civilian
government since 1999 has raised questions as to whether the form
of government in Nigeria is democratic or something else. This book
examines the state of human rights in Nigeria, and the different
sources, reasons, and dimensions of human rights violations during
the country's Fourth Republic.
