ENGLISH MASTERPIECES - AN ANTHOLOGY OF IMAGINATIVE LITERATURE FROM
CHAUCER TO T. S. ELIOT UNDER THE GENERAL EDITOR SHIP OF MAYNARD
MACK, YALE UNIVERSITY edited by WILLIAM FROST Associate Professor
of English, University of California, Santa Barbara Second Edition
PRENTICE-HALL, INC. Englewood Cliffs, N. J. VOLUME ONE THE AGE OF
CHAUCER VOLUME TWO ELIZABETHAN DRAMA VOLUME THREE RENAISSANCE
POETRY VOLUME FOUR MILTON VOLUME FIVE THE AUGUSTANS VOLUME SIX
ROMANTIC AND VICTORIAN POETRY VOLUME SEVEN MODERN POETRY TO THE
READER These volumes present a carefully proportioned collection of
writings in English, from Chaucer to the present, which are
primarily valuable as literary works of art. Writings in the less
imaginative modes have been almost entirely excluded, and complete
worlds have been preferred to excerpts. Where cutting or selection
was necessary, an effort has been made to preserve what is crucial
for an tinder standing of the artistic value of the whole piece.
Since novels cannot be condensed or excerpted satisfactorily, they
have been omitted. Separate reprints of prose fiction may be used
to supplement the last two volumes of this set. The introductions
try to focus the reader s attention on what is imaginatively
interesting and valuable in the various selections. If they
succeed, they will at the same time provide the justification for
this anthology and distinguish it from the many other anthologies
that are available. 1950, 1961, BY PREVTICE-HALL, IXC. ALL RIGHTS
