Starring William Holden, Grace Kelly, Frederick March, Mickey Rooney, and Robert Strauss (as “Beer Barrel”). Condensing an entire James Michner novel into a 93-minute movie takes some skilful writing, but the filmmakers seem to have got it right with this absorbing Korean War drama that won an Oscar for Best Special Effects.
William Holden was young and handsome back in 1953, and here he plays Lt Harry Brubaker – a weary fighter pilot who has already seen much action in WWII. His screen wife is Nancy (the criminally-beautiful Grace Kelly. What more can I say?). Double-Oscar winner Frederick March portrays Admiral George Tarrant, while pint-sized Mickey Rooney – probably about the most consistantly electric personality we've ever seen on the screen – is mad Irish-tempered Mike Forney: a rescue helicopter pilot who always flies while wearing an outsize green top-hat!
The tale of the mission is based largely on fact. The Toko Ri bridges in North Korea form a vital link for the communist military supplies, and must be destroyed. Admiral Tarrant thinks that the reluctant Brubaker would be the ideal man to handle the job.
Yeah, we've seen it all before...but certainly not with a stellar cast of this talent and magnitude! (Mickey Rooney today remains as the sole survivor.)

Not every pilot can guide his aircraft from a wave-tossed deck, seek out targets over unfamiliar Korean terrain, then return to what looks like a speck in the sea. Naval Reservist Harry Brubaker can.
This masterful story of a war-weary World War II veteran who must leave his family to fight again combines moving drama with surefire, bombs-away aerial action.
