18th and 19th century popular calendars are a singular media-historical testimony of everyday experience with an intercultural dimension. The articles assembled here analyze their evolution, the relationship between text and images, characteristics typical of the genre, gender-specific issues, the cross-cultural relevance of this reading matter, and the role of calendars in the popularization of Enlightenment thinking in Germany, France, Switzerland, and the United States. The volume is a product of two research projects funded by the Volkswagen Foundation and the German Research Council and conducted by the editor of the present volume in conjunction with Hans-JA1/4rgen LA1/4sebrink and Jean-Yves Mollier.
