This is definitely not your everyday, cliched, family fun, superhero movie. This tale is based on a popular graphic novel, and takes itself quite seriously. The action is brutal, fast and violent, and even happy endings are not guaranteed.
Set in an alternate 1985, where Nixon is still president and the U.S. won the Vietnam War, a former superhero gets murdered. His former colleagues have to band up once again to try and expose a conspiracy and save the world. But at what cost? And finding that out is one of the greatest movie adventures I've been on in a long long while.
The plot might seem simple, but there's so much depth to the characters that this becomes a moral tale of the highest order. And as this "simple" plot starts expanding, its leads to a few startling twists and turns that are bound to make you think about your own feelings about right and wrong.
The performances are all excellent, especially Jackie Earle Hayley as the masked and mysterious Rorshack. The special effects are truly outstanding and while the movie might take some time to actually get going for some, I found the pace for the first half spot-on, especially as we delved into a flashback for each main character to get to know them. All in all, a dark and gritty take on superheroes, absolutely brilliant. (5 out of 5, by Carlisle Johnson)
Watchmen is set in an alternate 1985 America in which costumed superheroes are part of the fabric of everyday society.
When one of his former colleagues is murdered, the outlawed but no less determined masked vigilante Rorschach sets out to uncover a plot to kill and discredit all past and present superheroes.
As he reconnects with his former crime-fighting legion - a disbanded group of retired superheroes, only one of whom has true powers - Rorschach glimpses a wide-ranging and disturbing conspiracy with links to their shared past and catastrophic consequences for the future.
Their mission is to watch over humanity...but who is watching the Watchmen?
