Every Winsor & Newton Artists' Oil Colour is individually formulated to enhance each pigment's natural characteristics and ensure stability of colour. By exercising maximum quality control throughout all stages of manufacture, selecting the most suitable drying oils and method of pigment dispersion, the unique individual properties of each colour are preserved.
Combined with over 170 years of manufacturing and quality control expertise, the formulation of Artist's Oil Colour ensures the best raw materials are made into the world's finest colours.
Artists' Oil Colour uses the highest level of pigmentation consistent with the broadest handling properties. The quantity of pigment used provides covering power and tinting strength.
Probably the most famous Sable water colour brush there is. Manufactured from only the finest pure Kolinsky Sable hair, in rust-proof, seamless nickel plated ferrules with black polished handles. Series 7 uses only the highest quality raw materials and enjoys hand made manufacture by brush makers with years of experience. For larger sizes, each brush is packed into an individual box with a tag included to indicate the name of the Series 7 brush maker who made that particular brush. The tradition of excellence began in 1866 when Queen Victoria gave orders that Winsor & Newton be commanded to produce brushes of the finest possible quality in her favourite size; No.7. Now known as Series 7, these brushes have a long-established world wide reputation for excellence.

As with all Winsor & Newton colours, every colour in the range is individually formulated to take advantage of the natural characteristics of each pigment and to ensure the stability of the colour. The vehicle (oil modified alkyd resin) allows the colour to dry quicker whilst retaining the other characteristics of conventional oil colour.Because alkyd resin has physical properties that differ slightly from those of traditional oils, the pigment load is somewhat different as well. Experienced painters will notice slightly greater transparency compared to Artists' Oil Colour. The colour has been formulated to offer the greatest degree of tinting strength possible (consistent with good handling properties), and to take full advantage of the true characteristics of each pigment.

The colours are chosen according to mass tone (colour from tube), undertone (bias of colour when in a thin film), colour strength, relative opacity and the character of the pigment in water colour, ie. granulating, staining or even wash. The resultant colour spectrum ensures the largest number of colours can be mixed from the range. The optimum brilliance of every colour in the Artists' Water Colour range is unparalleled by any other water colour. Remarkably, this brilliance is combined with high permanence.

A high level of pigmentation provides good covering power and tinting strength. While it can't match the superior pigment load of Artists' Oil Colour, the Winton range is much stronger than many other artists' quality ranges. The economical cost has been achieved through the use of moderately priced pigments rather than lessening the pigment content to an unacceptable level. Winsor & Newton formulation, manufacture and quality control ensure a product of absolute excellence. The Winton range has a more uniform consistency than Artists' Oil Colour and is slightly stiffer. It offers excellent retention of brush and palette knife strokes.
For fine detail, lines & washes. A traditional and popular head shape for all-purpose water colour work. Can be used for broad strokes yet it will also form a sharp point. They possess good colour holding capacity, sensitivity, spring and durability.

Good quality gouache colour is a combination of pigment and gum arabic. Gum arabic is the binder that holds the pigment, giving it that perfect creamy 'flowing' consistency. (NB some cheaper brands may have chalk added to the pigment which in turn effects the 'flow and the brilliance of colour'). As a result of the high level of pigmentation Winsor & Newton Designers Gouache dries to a matt finish. This reduces the reflection when photographing the work.
Every colour within the range has an individual formulation to take advantage of each and every pigment characteristic and ensure tube stability.
One of the natural attributes of gum arabic - the binder used in Designers Gouache is that it is quick drying. This faster drying allows quick working techniques and preliminary sketching to be done. Also as with water colour, work can be finished quickly and as a result travelling with work is made much easier.

Only the purest pigments and the highest grades are used in Artists' Acrylics, formulated individually to ensure the cleanest, most brilliant colours. Winsor & Newton have developed a new unique binder that is translucent when wet and dries clear. It is this that ensures there is virtually no shift in colour at all and colours remain as brilliant when dry as they are when wet.
Artists' Acrylic offers the smooth, thick, short, buttery consistency preferred by most acrylic artists, with no stringiness. This juicy and painterly colour enables paints to be blended more easily and mixed with mediums or even water for water colour techniques. Whilst maintaining individual pigment characteristics these paints have achieved a uniform buttery consistency across the range, making it easier for the artist to handle during painting. These colours retain brushstrokes and the profile of the paint for excellent impasto effects. They also dilute gradually as water or medium is added, giving artists the maximum control over their paint.
There is no water within the formulation of Artisan. The linseed
oil and safflower oil vehicles have been modified to allow the
colour to accept water, creating a stable emulsion, while retaining
the working characteristics of conventional oil colour.Artisan is
ideal for:- Oil painters who are sensitive to, or simply want to
avoid exposure to solvents such as white spirit (mineral spirits)
or turpentine. Students and teachers in schools and colleges where
the use of oil colour is prohibited because of the solvents.
Artists working in shared studio space where the build up of
solvent levels could lead to a harmful concentration of vapours and
a generally an unpleasant odour. Artists who work within a small
home environment and wish to reduce the odour of oil painting. For
travel, all Artisan products (Colour & Mediums) can be
transported on aeroplanes (subject to the agreement of the
airline). The range has also been formulated with a high proportion
of single pigments for brilliance of colour and clean colour
mixing. The most suitable oil and methods for dispersion have been
selected to bring out the individual characteristics, from opacity
to natural transparency, of each pigment in the Artisan range.
