Mikako aims to take the world of fashion by storm but stumbles when love comes into season in this coming-of-age tale from the creator of Nana!

Welcome to Happy Berry! No, this isn’t a fruit stand, but the label dreamed up by aspiring fashion designer Mikako Koda. In her quest to make a name for herself in the fashion world, Mikako enters Yazawa Arts Academy, a prestigious art school, alongside her strictly platonic childhood friend Tsutomu. But there’s one problem—Tsutomu’s uncanny resemblance to a rock star skyrockets him to popularity and leads him to date the prettiest girl in school. Now Mikako can’t help but wonder if what she feels is jealousy.

As Mikako and her friends work hard to get their club up and running, Mikako notices Tsutomu has gotten close to their new member, Ayumi, and begins to grow jealous. Later, Tsutomu and Mikako celebrate their birthdays, but Mikako’s father’s absence weighs heavily on her heart, prompting Tsutomu to urge her to track him down. Will this long-overdue reunion lead to a breakthrough for Mikako, or is nothing she can do extreme enough to force her to unbottle her emotions?

R371 Discovery Miles 3 710 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this beautifully illustrated and deeply philosophical graphic memoir, legendary artist Ai Weiwei explores the connection between artistic expression and intellectual freedom through interwoven stories from all the seasons of his life.

As a child living in exile during the Cultural Revolution, Ai Weiwei often found himself with nothing to read but government-approved comic books. Although they were restricted by the confines of political propaganda, Ai Weiwei was struck by the artists' ability to express their thoughts on art and humanity through graphic storytelling. Now, decades later, Ai Weiwei and Italian comic artist Gianluca Costantini present Zodiac, Ai Weiwei's first graphic memoir.

Inspired by the twelve signs of the Chinese zodiac and their associated human characteristics, Ai Weiwei masterfully interweaves ancient Chinese folklore with stories of his life, family, and career. The narrative shifts back and forth through the years--at once in the past, present, and future--mirroring memory and our relationship to time. As readers delve deeper into the beautifully illustrated pages of Zodiac, they will find not only a personal history of Ai Weiwei and an examination of the sociopolitical climate in which he makes his art, but a philosophical exploration of what it means to find oneself through art and freedom of expression.

Contemplative and political, Zodiac will inspire readers to return again and again to Ai Weiwei's musings on the relationship between art, time, and our shared humanity.

Against a backcloth of philosophical debates on science and technology, and in particular the viewpoints of Karl Marx, this three-volume set proposes to reconsider science and technology and explores how the philosophy of science and technology responds to scientific and technological evolutions and an ever-changing world. The first volume analyses Marx's reconsideration of science and technology in five parts: its positioning, its historical practice, alienation of science and technology, and its relationship with productivity and human liberty. In the second volume, viewpoints and problems of scientism and anti-scientism are discussed, covering topics such as instrumental reason, scientific optimism and pessimism, irrationalism and the deconstruction of scientism. The final volume discusses complementary value choices, the loss and awakening of scientific culture and reveals a vison for a liberal and open world of science and technology. The volumes will appeal to scholars and students interested in Marxist philosophy, the philosophy of science and technology and topics related to scientific culture.

As his personal circumstances move in constant flux, Ai Weiwei remains a cultural magnet. Renowned for his political activism and social media activity almost as much as for his social interventions, contemporary approach to the readymade, and knowledge of Chinese traditional crafts, Ai's fame extends throughout and beyond the art world. Drawn from TASCHEN's limited Collector's Edition, this monograph explores each of Ai's career phases up until his release from Chinese custody. It features extensive visual material to trace Ai's development from his early New York days right through to his recent practice. Focus moments include his international breakthrough in the early 2000s, his porcelain Sunflower Seeds at the Turbine Hall of the Tate Modern, his response to the Sichuan earthquake of 2008, and his police detention in 2011. With behind-the-scenes studio pictures, production shots, and numerous statements derived from exclusive interviews with Ai, we gain privileged access to the artist's process, influences, and importance. The book includes texts from Uli Sigg, Ai's longtime friend and former Swiss ambassador to China and Roger M. Buergel, who curated the 2007 documenta and hosted the artist's Fairytale piece. Introduction to Thermodynamics and Kinetic Theory of Matter 2e (Paperback, 2nd Edition): A. I. Burshtein Introduction to Thermodynamics and Kinetic Theory of Matter 2e (Paperback, 2nd Edition)
A. I. Burshtein
R3,863 R3,097 Discovery Miles 30 970 Save R766 (20%) Out of stock

An updated and expanded translation of the highly popular Russian textbook, Introduction to Thermodynamics and Kinetic Theory of Matter examines equilibrium and kinetic properties of matter--gas, liquid, and solid--using the general principles of thermodynamics and kinetic theory. Readable and accessible throughout, this book provides both thermodynamic and statistical points of view, covering thermodynamic potentials, such as entropy and free energy, whenever relevant.

The book takes a fresh approach to its subject matter, focusing equally on condensed matter and gases. It compares rarefied and condensed matter, classical and quantum systems, and real and ideal gases. Central to the book are intermolecular interactions, and the process by which they lead matter into a change of state. The author discusses the solid, crystalline phase, showing how it can be manipulated by lattice vibration as well as by thermal pressure. In addition, this is the only book in which the quasi-thermodynamic theory of gas/liquid interface is used for density profile calculation within the van der Waals theory of surface tension.

Another major theme investigated here is the irreversible transfer properties of matter, such as diffusion and viscosity, heat and electric conductivity. The book presents the hypothesis of "local equilibrium, " which facilitates the calculation of the fluxes of matter, heat, or charge-- comparing them and predicting the resultant density and temperature dependencies of transport coefficients. Examples from situations when local equilibrium is absent are also included.

Finally, the book covers all reversible processes subject to the principles of thermodynamics. This isespecially useful in experimental applications--optimizing the work of heat engines and pumps; providing methods for the condensation of gases into liquids; and explaining various phenomena such as phase equilibrium and transitions, surface tension, and thermal radiation.

Addressing a broad audience, and using inductive logic and many illustrations, Introduction to Thermodynamics and Kinetic Theory of Matter leads the reader from basic phenomena to advanced models, and provides from the outset opportunities for experimental work in related fields of physics and physical chemistry.

This highly original book about the kinetic properties of the microparticles constituting gases, liquids, and solids--as well as light--is an updated version of a very popular Russian text. Dealing with areas of molecular physics, this edition updates all information, covering elementary statistical mechanics and kinetic theory, and expanding the Russian text to include thermodynamics.

Particularly innovative are the methods--exclusive to this book--for calculating surface structure within quasi-thermodynamics. Also unique is the comparison between rarefied and condensed matter, which is not offered in any other text.

Addressing both students and advanced researchers, the book assumes only a general math and classical mechanics background, allowing the reader to progress quickly from the introductory material to complex topics. It provides:

  • Rigorous quantitative treatment of all phenomena, useful for starting experiments in related fields of physics and physical chemistry
  • Comprehensive coverage of molecular and photon gases, liquids and solids-- for students and faculty in physics
  • Aunique treatment of solid and liquid equations of state--for researchers in thermophysics and physical chemistry
  • 150 illustrations and references on experimental data for equations of state, orthometric curves, the knots of compressibility factor isotherms, as well as liquid-gas interface
  • Several of the author's own original results
  • An extensive list of suggested readings for both fundamental and in-depth study
International Institutions in Trade and Finance: A.I. MacBean, P. N Snowden International Institutions in Trade and Finance
A.I. MacBean, P. N Snowden
R955 Discovery Miles 9 550 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1981, this book provided an up-to-date and critical review of the recent history and current status of the main economic institutions affecting international trade and relations at the time. The authors emphasise the economic effectiveness or otherwise of such bodies as GATT, IMF, EEC, UNCTAD and the World Bank, but take account of the political factors present in both the initial ‘design’ and in the way that the institutions have developed. In particular, the book analyses the changed degree of dominance which the USA had been able to exert on the international community.

Biocentrism and Modernism (Hardcover, New Ed): Oliver A.I. Botar Biocentrism and Modernism (Hardcover, New Ed)
Oliver A.I. Botar
R4,451 Discovery Miles 44 510 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Examining the complex intersections between art and scientific approaches to the natural world, Biocentrism and Modernism reveals another side to the development of Modernism. While many historians have framed this movement as being mechanistic and "against" nature, the essays in this collection illuminate the role that nature-centric ideologies played in late-nineteenth to mid-twentieth-century Modernism. The essays in Biocentrism and Modernism contend that it is no accident that Modernism arose at the same time as the field of modern biology. From nineteenth-century discoveries, to the emergence of the current environmentalist movement during the 1960s, artists, architects, and urban planners have responded to currents in the scientific world. Sections of the volume treat both philosophic worldviews and their applications in theory, historiography, and urban design. This collection also features specific case studies of individual artists, including Raymond Duchamp-Villon, Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, and Jackson Pollock.

New research into medieval English literature, with a particular focus on manuscripts and writing. This acclaimed study of English medieval manuscripts and early printed books - many items from Professor Takamiya's own collection - quickly sold out in hardcover. The subjects range from Saint Jerome to Tolkien, with particular concentrations on Chaucer, Gower, Malory and religious and historical writings of the late middle ages. There are essays examining the work of early printers such as Caxton and de Worde, and of bibliophiles and antiquarians in modern times. Befitting a tribute to a bibliophile, this volume has been handsomely designed by Lida Kindersley of the Cardozo Kindersley Workshop in Cambridge, and is extensively illustrated. The volume as a whole constitutes a substantial body of research on medieval English literature, and early books and manuscripts. Contributors: Richard Barber, Nicolas Barker, Richard Beadle, N.F. Petroleum refining is one of the most important yet challenging industries, and continues to be a major contributor in the production of transportation fuels and chemicals. Current economic, regulatory and environmental concerns place significant pressure on refiners to upgrade and optimize the refining process. At the same time, new product demands are urging refiners to explore alternative processing units and feedstocks.

This textbook represents a pioneering and comprehensive introduction to this complex subject, using many of the tools and techniques currently employed in modern refinery process simulation.

Adopting a systematic and practical approach, the authors include the theory, case studies and hands-on workshops, explaining how to work with real data. As a result, senior-level undergraduate and graduate students, as well as industrial engineers learn how to develop and use the latest computer models for the predictive modeling and optimization of integrated refinery processes.

Additional material is available online providing relevant spreadsheets and simulation files for all the models and examples presented in the book.

Kettle's Yard, Cambridge, exhibition catalogue on the internationally renowned Chinese artist Ai Weiwei (b. 1957, Beijing) in which new and existing work will be shown alongside historic Chinese objects. The exhibition will explore notions of truth, authenticity and value, as well as globalisation, the coronavirus pandemic and the current geopolitical crisis. Ai Weiwei will reflect upon the liberty in the West, in contrast to China and other authoritarian regimes, to question truth and authority, express doubt and seek transparency in political matters. However, in relation to art appreciation, the Chinese have a long tradition of a more fluid and less fixed view in relation to authenticity than is the case in the West, often valuing the act of copying.
