This title examines Mexican politics in the wake of Cardenismo, and the dawn of Miguel Aleman's presidency. This new book focuses on the decade of the 1940s, and analyzes Alcmanismo into the early years of the 1950s. Based upon a decade of intensive investigation, it is the first broad and substantial study of the political life of the Mexican nation during this period, thus opening a new era to historical investigation. Analytical yet lively, mixing political and cultural history, Mexico in the 1940s captures the humor, passion, and significance of Mexico during the World War II and post-war years when Mexicans entered the era called "the miracle" because of the nation's economic growth and political stability. Niblo develops the case that the Mexico of today -- politically and executively centralized, stressing business and industry, corrupt, ignoring the needs of the majority of the population -- has its roots in the decade and a half after 1940. Finally, Mexico in the 1940s offers a unique interpretation of Mexican domestic politics in this period, including an explanation of how political leaders were able to reverse the course of the Mexican Revolution in the 1940s; an original interpretation of corruption in Mexican political life, a phenomenon that did not end in the 1940s; and an analysis of the relationship between the U.S. media interests, the Mexican state and the Mexican media companies that still dominate mass communication today.
This volume reflects the fruitful connections between group theory and topology. It contains articles on cohomology, representation theory, geometric and combinatorial group theory. Some of the world's best known figures in this very active area of mathematics have made contributions, including substantial articles from Ol'shanskii, Mikhajlovskii, Carlson, Benson, Linnell, Wilson and Grigorchuk, which will be valuable reference works for some years to come. Pure mathematicians working in the fields of algebra, topology, and their interactions, will find this book of great interest.
The articles in these two volumes arose from papers given at the 1991 International Symposium on Geometric Group Theory, and they represent some of the latest thinking in this area. Many of the world's leading figures in this field attended the conference, and their contributions cover a wide diversity of topics. This second volume contains solely a ground breaking paper by Gromov, which provides a fascinating look at finitely generated groups. For anyone whose interest lies in the interplay between groups and geometry, these books will be an essential addition to their library.
These two volumes contain survey papers given at the 1991 international symposium on geometric group theory, and they represent some of the latest thinking in this area. Many of the world's leading figures in this field attended the conference, and their contributions cover a wide diversity of topics. Volume I contains reviews of such subjects as isoperimetric and isodiametric functions, geometric invariants of a groups, Brick's quasi-simple filtrations for groups and 3-manifolds, string rewriting, and algebraic proof of the torus theorem, the classification of groups acting freely on R-trees, and much more. Volume II consists solely of a ground breaking paper by M. Gromov on finitely generated groups.
