A boy doesn't automatically become a man at age 18. What
differentiates a man from a boy is the way he lives. A boy lives
day to day, wants to be MVP, plays, wants the reassurance of the
crowd, and is a predator. A man has a vision for his life, is a
team player, works, has the courage to take a minority position,
and is a protector. These are the five marks of a man. It's not
enough to just know them. A real man aggressively pursues them on a
daily basis. Drawing from his own experience and the lives of
others, pastor Brian Tome calls on men to examine themselves and
take steps in the direction of a fully realized manhood that honors
God, respects women, elevates others, and works purposefully for an
end greater than their own satisfaction or pleasure. It's time for
men to step into their honorable place in the world and lean into a
new reality--one defined by strength, purpose, and honor.
There are 45-year-old boys and 15-year-old men. What separates them
isn't age, job status, or achievement. It's something deeper and
more ancient. The life of every man that matters has been defined
by the five marks of a man. This tactical guide is designed to call
out, develop, and grow these marks in your own life. This isn't a
book--it's a tool. It's not something you read; it's something you
use to build a life that works. Each section focuses on one of the
five marks, offering challenges, projects, and plans to put them
into action. You're going to get your hands dirty. You're going to
be in uncomfortable situations. You're going to be pushed. And
you're going to grow because of it. This isn't your grandma's
fill-in-the-blank Bible study because you aren't a grandma. No one
accidentally falls into a life of meaning--a life of meaning is
built, intentional choice by intentional choice. Men rise to meet
challenges. Now is your time. The question is: will you?
In the early 1990s, financial liberalization started in India, and
it was thought that such reforms would increase economic growth.
This argument formed part of the finance led industrialization
hypothesis and although higher growth resulted, higher
industrialization did not immediately.
This book is the first study to comprehensively apply the flow
of funds model for India.
Using detailed data of the Indian economy, the whole financial
sector is presented with associated policy simulation for India.
The demand function is theoretically grounded in the Almost Ideal
Demand System and cointegration techniques are adapted into the
econometric methodology. The policy simulation experiments are
conducted with a view to analyzing the delivery of loanable funds
to sectors which are the most in need of poverty-reducing economic
growth. The system-wide simulation as a result of interactions with
disaggregated economic sectors will allow the analysis of a wide
spectrum of policy effects on issues such as the determinant of
interest rates, financial capital formulation, and the role of
financial institutions, government debt and allocation of
credit.
India's Emerging Financial Market provides a thorough and
rigorous analysis of policy responses in India and will be of
interest to academics working on development economics in general
and South Asia in particular.

Teaching Technology: Intermediate to Senior Phase covers both the
conceptual and practical components of the subject of technology,
as outlined in the CAPS. This involves the teaching of
discipline-specific skills, such as problem solving using the
design process, and also broader life skills, such as needs
identification. The book explores teaching methods for technology
education, covering lesson planning, classroom management,
assessment and the use of resources and information and
communications technology (ICT). Because science is integrated with
technology in the intermediate phase, there is a special section on
how teachers should approach this. For the senior phase, the book
examines how particular knowledge strands should be dealt with. A
unique aspect is the focus on integrating indigenous knowledge and
technologies. It is also written with an awareness of the issues of
sustainability. The book is appropriate for student teachers in BEd
and PGCE programmes as well as in-service teachers and those
enrolled in ACE/ADE programmes.
This book analyses the evolution of key Islamist movements and
parties in Egypt, Tunisia, and Morocco. It offers a novel and
exhaustive study of the evolution of Islamists as shaped by the
interplay of domestic, regional, and international factors.
Providing an in-depth, theoretically grounded and empirically rich
study of political Islam, the volume explores how the overly
under-appreciated interaction of domestic, regional and
international factors impacts the development of contemporary
Islamist actors. By tracing how they adapt and resist to
challenging environments within and beyond national boundaries, it
charts and explains many of the critical changes and continuities
in their organisational set-up, policy choices, ideological
leanings, and narratives. Through an inside-out perspective and
actor-centered approach, this book aims to overcome the
'compartmentalisation' of the domestic and international spheres as
well as the 'obsession' with moderation for Islamists.
Specifically, the book chapters address how Islamist actors
(re)interpret external events, norms, ideas, and practices from
abroad in the light of the constraints and opportunities of their
respective domestic environments. At the crossroads of comparative
politics, international relations and area studies, it is a key
resource for practitioners and scholars interested in party
politics, social movements, political Islam and North Africa. The
chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue
of the journal Contemporary Politics.
"I am a fanatic about freedom. And I'm fanatical about coming at
you hard in this book."
Maybe you're not as free as you think you are. Even worse, you may
have been duped into believing that a "balanced" life is the key to
happiness (it isn't) or that a relationship with God is about
layering on rules and restrictions (nope).
Whether it's media-fueled fear, something a parent or teacher said
that you just can't shake, or even the reality of dark spiritual
forces bent on keeping you down, something is holding you back from
the full-on freedom God intends for you.
The Bible says, "Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is
freedom." Not fear. Not guilt. Not morality. Freedom. You can have
the sort of joy you thought only kids could have. The day of
freedom is here.
Trying to understand how the world looks through the eyes of
individuals and groups and how it shapes the ways they think and
act is something social workers do all the time. It is what social
theorists do too. This book identifies and explains in a highly
accessible manner the absolute value of social theory for social
work. Drawing on the theoretical ideas and perspectives of a wide
range of classical and modern social theorists, the book
demonstrates the insights their work can bring to bear on a wide
range of social work practice scenarios, issues and debates.
Departing with the work of the classical theorists, the book covers
a diverse range of theoretical traditions including phenomenology,
symbolic interactionism, Norbert Elias, Michel Foucault, Pierre
Bourdieu, feminism and globalization theory. Putting to work ideas
from these different perspectives, a range of social work
scenarios, issues and debates are opened up and explored. The final
chapter brings together the various theoretical strands, and
critically considers the contribution they can make towards
realizing core social work values in a rapidly globalizing world.
Demonstrating exactly how and in what ways social theory can make
important and enduring contributions to social work, Social Theory
for Social Work is essentialial reading for social work students,
practitioners and professionals alike.

Whilst advances in biotechnology and information technology have
undoubtedly resulted in better quality of life for mankind, they
can also bring about global problems. The legal response to the
challenges caused by the rapid progress of technological change has
been slow and the question of how international human rights should
be protected and promoted with respect to science and technology
remains unexplored. The contributors to this book explore the
political discourse and power relations of technological growth and
human rights issues between the Global South and the Global North
and uncover the different perspectives of both regions. They
investigate the conflict between technology and human rights and
the perpetuation of inequality and subjection of the South to the
North. With emerging economies such as Brazil playing a major role
in trade, investment and financial law, the book examines how human
rights are affected in Southern countries and identifies
significant challenges to reform in the areas of international law
and policy.
US Defence Strategy from Vietnam to Operation Iraqi Freedom
examines the thirty-year transformation in American military
thought and defence strategy that spanned from 1973 through 2003.
During these three decades, new technology and operational
practices helped form what observers dubbed a 'Revolution in
Military Affairs' in the 1990s and a 'New American Way of War' in
the 2000s. Robert R. Tomes tells for the first time the story of
how innovative approaches to solving battlefield challenges gave
rise to non-nuclear strategic strike, the quest to apply
information technology to offset Soviet military advantages, and
the rise of 'decisive operations' in American military strategy. He
details an innovation process that began in the shadow of Vietnam,
matured in the 1980s as Pentagon planners sought an integrated
nuclear-conventional deterrent, and culminated with battles fought
during blinding sandstorms on the road to Baghdad in 2003. An
important contribution to military innovation studies, the book
also presents an innovation framework applicable to current defence
transformation efforts. This book will be of much interest to
students of strategic studies, US defence policy and US politics in
general.
This book attempts to present a readable format on plant breeding
principles and their application, based on the collective
experience of the three authors, but with a heavy dependence on the
scientific literature. Modem pedagogy recognizes that teaching can
occur when students are motivated to learn. Subject matter must be
communicated in an interesting, appealing, and understandable
fashion. In preparing the text, every effort has been made to
translate pertinent plant breeding references into a clear,
logical, and comprehensible format for those studying the
challenging and dynamic field of plant breeding.
From 1973 to the 2003 liberation of Iraq, American military thought
and defense planning was transformed. "US Military Innovation and
Strategy after Vietnam" presents the reader with a clear overview
and assessment of this Revolution in Military Affairs (RMA).
Robert Tomes skillfully details this thirty-year process that began
in the aftermath of Vietnam, matured in the 1980s as Pentagon
planners sought an integrated nuclear-conventional deterrent, and
culminated with battles fought during sandstorms on the road to
Baghdad in 2004. He distills the key historical, conceptual, and
doctrinal factors central to the evolution of US defense policy and
military thought during the last three decades. In doing so, Tomes
explores the widespread perception that advanced US war fighting
capabilities became suddenly available in the early 1990s, a
perception that skewed defense policy discourse at a time when a
more balanced understanding of historical factors was sorely
needed.
In addition, the reader is presented with a wide range of
invaluable insights into innovation phenomena and a clear
understanding of the origins and core elements of recent US
advances in areas such as battlefield surveillance and
reconnaissance, long-range precision strike, stealth technology,
and end-to-end information and knowledge capabilities.
This book will be of great interest to all students of the US
military, military history and of military and strategic studies in
general.
No matter how busy he was, Ben Franklin always found time to try
out new ideas. Such as a remote-control lock (so he could stay in
bed and lock his door), a rocking chair (which powered a fan), and
a windmill (to turn his meat roaster). Aside from being a man of
ideas, he was an ambassador to England, a printer, an almanac
maker, a politician, and even a vegetarian (for a time).
Highly acclaimed author Susan Tomes takes up various topics of
perennial interest: how music awakens and even creates memories,
what 'interpretation' really means, what effect daily practice has
on the character, whether playing from memory is a burden or a
liberation, and why the piano is the right tool for the job. In
several decades as a distinguished classical pianist, Susan Tomes
has found that there are some issues which never go away. Here she
takes up various topics of perennial interest: how music awakens
and even creates memories, what "interpretation" really means, what
effect daily practice has on the character, whether playing from
memory is a burden or a liberation, and why the piano is the right
tool for the job. She pays homage to the influence of remarkable
teachers, asks what it takes for long-term chamber groups to
survive the strains of professional life, and explores the link
between music and health. Once again, her aim is to provide insight
into the motives and experiences of classical performers. In this
fourth book she also describes some of the challenges facing
classical musicians in today's society, and considers why this kind
of long-form music means so much to those who love it. SUSAN TOMES
has won a number of international awards as a performer and
recording artist, and in 2013 was awarded the Cobbett Medal for
distinguished services to chamber music. For fifteen years she was
the pianist of Domus, and for seventeen years she was the pianist
of the Florestan Trio, one of the world's leading piano trios. She
is the author of three previous books: Beyond the Notes (2004) and
Out of Silence (2010), both published by Boydell, and A Musician's
Alphabet (2006). She gives masterclasses, writes and presents radio
programmes on music, and sits on international competition juries.
Her blog on www.susantomes.com has a loyal following.
This is a book to appeal to a wide range of readers - pianists of
every level from beginner to professional, piano teachers,
musicians of all kinds, and the broader community of music-lovers.
In Speaking the Piano, renowned pianist Susan Tomes turns her
attention to teaching and learning. Teaching music encompasses
everything from putting a drum in a child's hands to helping an
accomplished musician unlock the meaning and spirit of the
classics. At every stage, some fundamental issues keep surfacing.
In this wide-ranging book, Susan Tomes reflects on how her own
experience as a learner, in different genres from classical to
jazz, hasinfluenced her approach to teaching. She tells us how her
performing career has given her insight into what young performers
need to know, and how discussions with students have fed into her
own practice. She describes the brilliant and intriguing teachers
whose masterclasses opened her ears to the many ways in which music
can be brought alive and communicated. This is a book to appeal to
a wide range of readers - pianists of every level from beginnerto
professional, piano teachers, musicians of all kinds, and the
broader community of music-lovers. In a passionate contribution to
the ongoing debate about the place of music in education, Susan
Tomes argues that this most inspiring of arts can play a unique
role in personal development. This is a lovely, wise, elegantly
written book, filled with tips and anecdotes which could be helpful
and encouraging for any pianist, whether a beginner or
aprofessional. Above all it is a book in which one senses
constantly the deep love the author has for music itself, for its
ability to inspire, touch and, indeed, change lives. STEPHEN HOUGH
SUSAN TOMES is a multi-award-winning pianist whose career
encompasses solo, duo and chamber music playing; she has been at
the heart of the internationally admired ensembles Domus, the

A fascinating history of the piano explored through 100 pieces
chosen by one of the UK's most renowned concert pianists "Tomes . .
. casts her net widely, taking in chamber music and concertos,
knotty avant-garde masterworks and (most welcome) jazz."-Richard
Fairman, Financial Times, "Best Books of 2021: Classical Music"
"[One of] the most beautiful books I got my hands on this year. . .
. About the shaping of this maddening, glorious, unconquerable
instrument."-Jenny Colgan, Spectator, "Books of the Year" An
astonishingly versatile instrument, the piano allows just two hands
to play music of great complexity and subtlety. For more than two
hundred years, it has brought solo and collaborative music into
homes and concert halls and has inspired composers in every musical
genre-from classical to jazz and light music. Charting the
development of the piano from the late eighteenth century to the
present day, pianist and writer Susan Tomes takes the reader with
her on a personal journey through 100 pieces including solo works,
chamber music, concertos, and jazz. Her choices include composers
such as Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Robert Schumann, Tchaikovsky,
Debussy, Gershwin, and Philip Glass. Looking at this history from a
modern performer's perspective, she acknowledges neglected women
composers and players including Fanny Mendelssohn, Maria
Szymanowska, Clara Schumann, and Amy Beach.
