Social financial reporting as an economic tool presents the firm as
a socio-economic unit with empowered social capital to enable a
sustainable economic solution, particularly in response to the
COVID-19 pandemic. Islamic social finance (ISF) is a corporate
social responsibility initiative in the form of humanitarian and
socio-development programs by Islamic financial institutions and
Shariah-compliant corporations. ISF is applied through various
methods and tools that structure based on Islamic Sharia Law. For
example, Islamic social finance tools would either be
philanthropic, involving activities such as zakat (obligatory
alms-giving), Sadaqah (voluntary alms-giving/charity), and waqf
(endowment) or ta'awun (cooperation-based activities), which
include Qardh al-hasan (benevolent loan) and kafala (guarantee).
Thus, Islamic social finance instruments play a vital role in
alleviating poverty and addressing socio-economic issues such as
illiteracy, unemployment, malnutrition, and health issues. As such,
integrated ISF reporting can empower sustainable economic
development and lead to recovery. The Handbook of Research on
Islamic Social Finance and Economic Recovery After a Global Health
Crisis provides insights on the role of Islamic social finance in
supporting and facilitating economic recovery in the post-COVID-19
era as well as reducing poverty and addressing the challenges of
socio-economic problems such as education, unemployment,
malnutrition, and health issues. This book is ideally intended for
practitioners, stakeholders, researchers, academicians, and
students who are interested in improving their understanding on the
role of Islamic social finance theoretically and empirically in
solving the issue of poverty and developing excellent funds
management to achieve economic empowerment with better
environmental sustainability.

This book reviews the latest information on the assessment of
surface and groundwater resources in Algeria. The authors cover a
large diversity of topics, including the status and assessment of
water resources, impacts of pesticides, soil droughts, analysis of
flood characteristics, hydrogeological investigations and modeling
applications, and evapotranspiration. Special attention is given to
the impacts of climate changes on water resources. The assessment
methods present in this book can be used or adapted to study other
regions of North Africa, Middle East and/or in the Mediterranean
with similar climate conditions as Algeria. This book and the
companion volume Water Resources in Algeria - Part II: Water
Quality, Treatment, Protection and Development will appeal to
engineers, researchers, graduate students and policymakers
interested in the field of groundwater and surface water
assessment.
This book reviews the latest water quality protection and water
resources development strategies in Algeria. It covers topics such
as the assessment and prediction of water quality, salt-water
intrusion, treatment of wastewater for reuse, and desalination as
an alternative source of water. The methods presented in this book
can also be applied in other regions with similar climate
conditions. Together with the companion volume Water Resources in
Algeria - Part I: Assessment of Surface and Groundwater Resources,
this book provides researchers with essential reference material on
tools and techniques for water quality assessment, treatment,
reuse, desalination, protection, and development, and offers a
valuable resource for engineers, graduate students and policymakers
who are interested in sustainable water resources.
This volume examines the school-to-prison pipeline, a concept that
has received growing attention over the past 10-15 years in the
United States. The "pipeline" refers to a number of interrelated
concepts and activities that most often include the criminalization
of students and student behavior, the police-like state found in
many schools throughout the country, and the introduction of youth
into the criminal justice system at an early age. The
school-to-prison pipeline negatively and disproportionally affects
communities of color throughout the United States, particularly in
urban areas. Given the demographic composition of public schools in
the United States, the nature of student performance in schools
over the past 50 years, the manifestation of school-to-prison
pipeline approaches pervasive throughout the country and the world,
and the growing incarceration rates for youth, this volume explores
this issue from the sociological, criminological, and educational
perspectives. Understanding, Dismantling, and Disrupting the
Prison-to-School Pipeline has contributions from scholars and
practitioners who work in the fields of sociology, counseling,
criminal justice, and who are working to dismantle the pipeline.
While the academic conversation has consistently called the
pipeline 'school-to-prison,' including the framing of many chapters
in this book, the economic and market forces driving the
prison-industrial complex urge us to consider reframing the
pipeline as one working from 'prison-to-school.' This volume points
toward the tensions between efforts to articulate values of
democratic education and schooling against practices that
criminalize youth and engage students in reductionist and
legalistic manners.
Taliban's return to power in August of 2021 caused everyone to ask
why the two decades of institution building in Afghanistan failed.
This book investigates the root causes of failed reforms in an
important area of reform: trade and credit institutions. It
explains why the efforts to reform and regulate the economic
institutions in Afghanistan failed and what we can learn from their
failure. It draws on more than eighty interviews with Afghan
merchants, business leaders, money dealers, and government
officials in five major provinces of Afghanistan to identify the
barriers to access to credit and to understand the performance of
formal institutions (banks) and their informal counterparts. This
book finds that Afghan merchants were often unable to benefit from
the offerings of formal institutions for three reasons: a highly
volatile business climate, uncertain contract enforcement, and an
unsupportive property rights system. Several informal institutions
have emerged that alleviate some of the credit constraints on
Afghan merchants. These informal institutions include risk-sharing
trade credit operations, money dealers' short-term working capital
loans, Gerawee, and Sar qufli. Although these informal institutions
have helped Afghan merchants survive, they are unable to support
economic growth. This book argues that countries like Afghanistan
should solve their institutional dilemma by adopting an approach
which the author calls "Grounded Institutional Reform." Using this
approach, a country would formalize existing informal institutions,
a development that would vastly increase their effectiveness. While
this book focuses on credit and trade in Afghanistan, the analysis
of "formalizing the informal" can easily be extended to solve other
types of economic problems in similarly situated countries. This
book should be of great interest to scholars, policymakers, and
development workers in the field of law, finance, and development.

This book emphasizes the rural and agricultural characteristics of
Bangladesh. It covers in depth Bangladesh's physiography,
hydrography, climate, soils, land utilization, migration and
settlement patterns, transportation infrastructure, and human and
natural resources.
In its struggle for independence, Bangladesh became the focal point
of world attention in the early 1970s. It emerged victorious, but
its development was hindered by the after-effects of the war-the
destruction of much of its infrastructure, problems of governmental
change, and the enormous difficulties faced by government and aid
officials in assembling a data base for long-range planning.
Professor Rashid's book-the first major comprehensive geographic
inventory of Bangladesh-provides the key elements for such a base.
Emphasizing the rural and agricultural characteristics of the
country, it also covers in depth its physiography, hydrography,
climate, soils, land utilization, migration and settlement
patterns, transportation infrastructure, and human and natural
resources.
High up on the 17th floor of a South London council block, a study
circle is being held. They re studying the Koran and Ishaq has been
attending for five years now, but official interest in the group is
building. With an EDL march in just a few days time, some of them
think they might be under surveillance. Ishaq is secure in his
identity as British and Muslim but, as papers discuss Asian sex
gangs in the North and a European politician appears on television
discussing a final solution, he wonders if Britain itself sees him
the same way. When he runs into Shams, an old friend looking for
work, Ishaq offers to help him out. And that s all it takes to
begin a chain reaction that will collide with extremism,
nationalism, and MI5.
