A powerful, unsettling portrait of ordinary family life in Cuba,
Carlos Manuel Ãlvarez’s debut novel The Fallen is a masterful
portrayal of a society in free fall. Diego, the son, is
disillusioned and bitter about the limited freedoms his country
offers him. Mariana, the mother, is unwell and forced to relinquish
her control over the home to her daughter, Maria, who has left
school and is working as a chambermaid in one of the state-owned
tourist hotels. The father, Armando, is a committed revolutionary
who is sickened by the corruption he perceives all around him. In
meticulously charting the disintegration of a family, The Fallen
offers a poignant reflection on contemporary Cuba and the clash of
the ardent idealism of the old guard with the jaded pragmatism of
the young.

It is November 25, 1960, and the bodies of three beautiful,
convent-educated sisters have been found near their wrecked Jeep at
the bottom of a 150-foot cliff on the north coast of the Dominican
Republic. El Caribe, the official newspaper, reports their deaths
as an accident. It does not mention that a fourth sister lives. Nor
does it explain that the sisters were among the leading opponents
of Gen. Raphael Leonidas Trujillo's dictatorship. It doesn't have
to. Everyone knows of Las Mariposas - "The Butterflies." Now, three
decades later, Julia Alvarez, also a daughter of the Dominican
Republic and long haunted by these sisters, immerses us in a
tangled and dangerous moment in Hispanic Caribbean history to tell
their story in the only way it can truly be understood - through
fiction. In this brilliantly characterized novel, the voices of all
four sisters - Minerva, Patria, Maria Teresa, and Dede - speak
across the decades, to tell their own stories - from hair ribbons
to gunrunning to prison torture - and to describe the everyday
horrors of life under Trujillo's rule. The Butterflies were
extraordinary women. Minerva, once the object of the dictator's
desire, had dared to publicly slap his face. Devout Patria found
her calling to the uprising through the church. Alluring - and vain
- Maria Teresa joined in pursuit of romance. Only Dede, the
practical one, the most diligent in her duty to family and
tradition, kept apart. And only she survived to see that their
names were remembered. Now, through the art and magic of Julia
Alvarez's imagination, the martyred Butterflies live again. And
Dede joins them as a heroine of equal courage.

sky, with simple explanations and gorgeous illustrations on every
page.
Organized around single country studies embedded in key historical
moments, this book introduces students to the shifting and varied
guerrilla history of Latin America from the late 1950s to the
present. It brings together academics and those directly involved
in aspects of the guerrilla movement, to understand each country's
experience with guerrilla warfare and revolutionary activism. The
book is divided in four thematic parts after two opening chapters
that analyze the tradition of military involvement in Latin
American politics and the parallel tradition of insurgency and coup
effort against dictatorship. The first two parts examine active
guerrilla movements in the 1960s and 1970s with case studies
including Bolivia, Nicaragua, Peru, Argentina, Chile and Uruguay.
Part 3 is dedicated to the Central American Civil Wars of the 1980s
and 1990s in Nicaragua, El Salvador and Guatemala. Part 4 examines
specific guerrilla movements which require special attention.
Chapters include Colombia's complicated guerrilla scenery; the
rivalling Shining Path and Tupac Amaru guerrillas in Peru; small
guerrilla movements in Mexico which were never completely
documented; and transnational guerrilla operations in the Southern
Cone. The concluding chapter presents a balance of the entire Latin
American guerrilla at present. Superbly accessible, while retaining
the complexity of Latin American politics, Latin American Guerrilla
Movements represents the best historical account of revolutionary
movements in the region, which students will find of great use
owing to its coverage and insights.

Unraveling: An Autoethnography of Suicide and Renewal, is an
autoethnographic story that explores the intricate relationship
among trauma, marginality, and mental health. It follows Mike
Alvarez, a precocious gay teenager from an immigrant Filipino
family who loses his grip on reality as he succumbs to so-called
mental illness. Divided into two parts, the first half of the book
uses evocative storytelling and in-the-moment narration to capture
the slow descent into anxiety, paranoia, depression, and
suicidality, as experienced by the author during young adulthood.
The second half of the book critically reflects upon the story
through a series of analytic chapters. In these chapters, the
author considers the role of narrative in cultivating empathy for
the mentally ill, the psychiatric-industrial complex’s
obstruction of that empathy, and the moral dilemmas
autoethnographers face when writing about self, other, and the
social world. This book will be suitable for scholars in the social
sciences, communication studies, and healthcare who study and use
autoethnography in their research. It will also be of value to
those interested in firsthand accounts of madness, as told by
members of marginalized communities.

Read the world to change the world with this artful picture book
about friendship and sign language, originally published in the
Philippines in concert with nonprofit Room to Read, and artfully
revised for this global edition. Our new neighbors' hands are
dancing. Their hands move as if to music. What are they saying to
each other? Sam's new neighbors' hands make graceful movements she
doesn't recognize. She watches through the window and wonders what
those dancing hands and expressive faces are saying. Soon Sam meets
her new neighbor, Mai. As they get closer, Mai teaches Sam some
Filipino sign language, and they share with one another their
passions and dreams. They both discover the joys of making a new
friend, a best friend. This sweet and perceptive picture book by
author Joanna Que and Charina Marquez tells the story of two girls,
one who speaks Filipino sign language and one who doesn't, learning
to communicate with one another. With playful illustrations by Fran
Alvarez that celebrate the beautiful movements of sign language,
this sweet picture book conveys the shy and fumbling experience of
making a friend, learning to overcome language barriers, and
embracing the differences that make each friendship unique.
The capacity to abuse, or in general affect the enjoyment of human,
labour and environmental rights has risen with the increased social
and economic power that multinational companies wield in the global
economy. At the same time, it appears that it is difficult to
regulate the activities of multinational companies in such a way
that they conform to international human, labour and environmental
rights standards. This has partially to do with the organization of
companies into groups of separate legal persons, incorporated in
different states, as well as with the complexity of the corporate
supply chain. Absent a business and human rights treaty, a more
coherent legal and policy approach is required. Faced with the
challenge of how to effectively access the right to remedy in the
European Union for human rights abuses committed by EU companies in
non-EU states, a diverse research consortium of academic and legal
institutions was formed. The consortium, coordinated by the
Globernance Institute for Democratic Governance, became the
recipient of a 2013 Civil Justice Action Grant from the European
Commission Directorate General for Justice. A mandate was thus
issued for research, training and dissemination so as to bring
visibility to the challenge posed and moreover, to provide some
solutions for the removal of barriers to judicial and non-judicial
remedy for victims of business-related human rights abuses in
non-EU states. The project commenced in September 2014 and over the
course of two years the consortium conducted research along four
specific lines in parallel with various training sessions across EU
Member States. The research conducted focused primarily on judicial
remedies, both jurisdictional barriers and applicable law barriers;
non-judicial remedies, both to company-based grievance. The results
of this research endeavour make up the content of this report whose
aim is to provide a scholarly foundation for policy proposals by
identifying specific challenges relevant to access to justice in
the European Union and to provide recommendations on how to remove
legal and practical barriers so as to provide access to remedy for
victims of business-related human rights abuses in non-EU states.
