The authors examine developments in labor standards in global
supply chains over the past thirty years, analyzing factors that
create challenges and opportunities for improving working
conditions. They illustrate the complex dynamics within and among
key groups, including brands, suppliers, governments, workers and
consumers. Using extended examples from China, Honduras, Bangladesh
and the United States, as well as new quantitative evidence, the
authors analyze stakeholders and mechanisms that create or obstruct
opportunities for improving labor rights. They evaluate key
clusters of actors and their interests in order to comprehensively
map the complex interactions and relationships that make up global
supply chains. Original data and analyses, including four in-depth
case studies, present a systematic evaluation of the points of
leverage for changing labor standards in sectors including apparel,
footwear, and electronics. This exciting new contribution to a
burgeoning field of study will benefit scholars of labor rights and
human rights, as well as students with an interest in labor and
working conditions. It also presents critical information for
political scientists, NGOs, and practitioners looking to effect
change in working conditions and learn more about key players in
the global economy.

'The chance to join "the Revival of the Great Lucia Berlin"' New
York Times 'Raw, elliptical, devilishly funny tales' Observer
Ranging from Texas, to Chile, to New Mexico and New York, in
Evening in Paradise Berlin writes about the good, the bad and
everything in between: struggling young mothers, husbands who pack
their bags and leave in the middle of the night, wives looking back
at their first marriage from the distance of their second . . . The
publication of A Manual for Cleaning Women, Lucia Berlin's dazzling
collection of short stories, marked the rediscovery of a writer
whose talent had gone unremarked by many. The incredible reaction
to Lucia's writing - her ability to capture the beauty and ugliness
that coexist in everyday lives, the extraordinary honesty and
magnetism with which she draws on her own history to breathe life
into her characters - included calls for her contribution to
American literature to be as celebrated as that of Raymond Carver.
Evening in Paradise is a careful selection from Lucia Berlin's
remaining stories - a jewel-box follow-up for her hungry fans.
"Health Communication in Practice: A Case Study Approach" offers a
comprehensive examination of the complex nature of health-related
communication. Modeled on Eileen Berlin Ray's 1993 volume, "Case
Studies in Health Communication," this text contains detailed case
studies that demonstrate in-depth applications of communication
theory in real-life situations.
With chapters written by medical practitioners as well as
communication scholars, the cases included herein cover a variety
of topics, populations, contexts and issues in health
communication, including:
*provider-recipient communication and its importance to subsequent
diagnosis and treatment;
*decision-making;
*social identity, particularly how people redefine and renegotiate
their social identity;
*communication dynamics within families and with health care
providers through unexpected health situations;
*delivery of health care; and
*health campaigns designed to disseminate health-related
information and change behaviors.
Reflecting the changes in health communication scholarship and
education over the past decade, chapters also explore current
topics such as delivering bad news, genetic testing, intercultural
communication, grieving families, and international health
campaigns. A list of relevant concepts and definitions is included
at the end of each case to help students make connections between
the scenario and the communication theories it reflects.
With its breadth of coverage and applied, practical approach, this
timely and insightful text will serve as required reading in
courses addressing the application of communication theory in a
health-related context.
A"how to draw" lesson spins hilariously out of control when a cat
won't stay happy in this relatable, madcap read-aloud, perfect for
fans of Dragons Love Tacos. Drawing a happy cat seems like such an
easy thing to do. Just follow the instructions in this book! Or
not. It's harder than it looks, especially if the cat wants a
skateboard or a stuffie or some friends or if she's hungry. And
when she does get hungry, you might just want to draw a
pizza-flinging catapult so she can eat with her friends from atop
her plane. This laugh-out-loud picture book will have kids asking
for repeat reads and parents nodding knowingly at the escalating
cycle of demands.
This collection of 49 word searches on relaxing topics offers a
recreational break that’s accessible to all and features hidden
messages that reveal bonus thematic details and fun facts.
This book focuses on the complexities of the communication of
health-related messages and information through the use of case
studies. The expert contributors to this volume are scholars who,
during their research and consulting, grapple with many of the
issues of concern to those studying health communication. While
several introductory books offer brief case studies to illustrate
concepts covered, this book provides in-depth cases that enable
more advanced students to apply theory to real situations.
Gives the reader a wider understanding of the role judges play
within the criminal justice system. Will be of interest for
criminal justice and legal scholars and criminal justice and law
students at both the undergraduate and graduate level on criminal
justice/criminology and law degree programs. As the book contains
interviews with judges from across the globe, it will have an
international appeal.

This volume examines this rapidly growing and changing field by
applying a unified framework that integrates both interpersonal and
mass communication investigations into theoretical and applied
issues. br br Using a systems perspective as the organizational
framework, relevant issues in the communication of health care,
ranging from micro to macro levels, are discussed. The contributors
recognize communication as a major factor affecting health today
and therefore go beyond examinations of health communication as
simply a dissemination of information regarding diseases,
diagnoses, and treatments to show it as a much larger and more
complex field with applications to all levels and forms of
communication. br br Communication and Health has as its three main
objecties: br br * providing a comprehensive, detailed, and up
to-date picture of health communication br br * applying an
integrated, logical structure to the field br br * making a clear,
strong statement regarding the state of healthcommunication and
examining its future prospects br br The contributors address such
issues as provider-patient communication, health care teams, health
care organizations, public health campaigns, and health education,
and then discuss the factors that affect the processing of health
information. Also included are examinations of changes in
communication use within interpersonal, small group, and
organizational health care contexts as well as the use of mass
media and other sources for public health campaigns and for raising
public awareness of health issues on a day-to-day basis. br br i
Communication and Health /i fills a void in current literature on
this field by serving as both a reference forprofessionals and
researchers and as a textbook for advanced undergraduate and
graduate level students in a multitude of courses. br

Producing Queer Youth challenges popular ideas about online media
culture as a platform for empowerment, cultural transformation, and
social progress. Based on over three years of participant action
research with queer teen media-makers and textual analysis of
hundreds of youth-produced videos and popular media campaigns, the
book unsettles assumptions that having a "voice" and gaining
visibility and recognition necessarily equate to securing rights
and resources. Instead, Berliner offers a nuanced picture of
openings that emerge for youth media producers as they negotiate
the structures of funding and publicity and manage their identities
with digital self-representations. Examining youth media practices
within broader communication history and critical media pedagogy,
she forwards an approach to media production that re-centers the
process of making as the site of potential learning and social
connection. Ultimately, she reframes digital media participation as
a struggle for-rather than, in itself, evidence of-power.
Feminist Interventions in Participatory Media is an edited
collection that brings together feminist theory and participatory
media pedagogy. It asks what, if anything, is inherently feminist
about participatory media? Can participatory media practices and
pedagogies be used to reanimate or enact feminist futures? And
finally, what reimagined feminist pedagogies are opened up (or
closed down) by participatory media across various platforms,
spaces, scales, and practices? Each chapter looks at a specific
example where the author(s) have used participatory media to
integrate technology and feminist praxis in production and
teaching. The case studies originate from sites as varied as
community organizations to large scale collaborations between
universities, public media, and social movements. They offer
insights into the continuities and disjunctures which stem from the
adoption of and adaption to participatory media technologies. In
complicating and dismantling perceptions of participatory media as
inherently liberatory, Feminist Interventions in Participatory
Media curbs the excesses of such claims and highlights those
pedagogical methods and processes that do hold liberatory
potential. This collection thus provides a roadmap toward
(re)imagining feminist futures, while grounding that journey in the
histories, practices, and past insights of feminism and media
studies.
