This book collects many of the presented papers, as plenary
presentations, mini-symposia invited presentations, or contributed
talks, from the European Conference on Numerical Mathematics and
Advanced Applications (ENUMATH) 2017. The conference was organized
by the University of Bergen, Norway from September 25 to 29, 2017.
Leading experts in the field presented the latest results and ideas
in the designing, implementation, and analysis of numerical
algorithms as well as their applications to relevant, societal
problems. ENUMATH is a series of conferences held every two years
to provide a forum for discussing basic aspects and new trends in
numerical mathematics and scientific and industrial applications.
These discussions are upheld at the highest level of international
expertise. The first ENUMATH conference was held in Paris in 1995
with successive conferences being held at various locations across
Europe, including Heidelberg (1997), Jyvaskyla (1999), lschia Porto
(2001), Prague (2003), Santiago de Compostela (2005), Graz (2007),
Uppsala (2009), Leicester (2011), Lausanne (2013), and Ankara
(2015).
This edited open access book presents the comprehensive outcome of
The European DataBio Project, which examined new data-driven
methods to shape a bioeconomy. These methods are used to develop
new and sustainable ways to use forest, farm and fishery resources.
As a European initiative, the goal is to use these new findings to
support decision-makers and producers - meaning farmers, land and
forest owners and fishermen. With their 27 pilot projects from 17
countries, the authors examine important sectors and highlight
examples where modern data-driven methods were used to increase
sustainability. How can farmers, foresters or fishermen use these
insights in their daily lives? The authors answer this and other
questions for our readers. The first four parts of this book give
an overview of the big data technologies relevant for optimal raw
material gathering. The next three parts put these technologies
into perspective, by showing useable applications from farming,
forestry and fishery. The final part of this book gives a summary
and a view on the future. With its broad outlook and variety of
topics, this book is an enrichment for students and scientists in
bioeconomy, biodiversity and renewable resources.

This open access book explores cutting-edge solutions and best
practices for big data and data-driven AI applications for the
data-driven economy. It provides the reader with a basis for
understanding how technical issues can be overcome to offer
real-world solutions to major industrial areas. The book starts
with an introductory chapter that provides an overview of the book
by positioning the following chapters in terms of their
contributions to technology frameworks which are key elements of
the Big Data Value Public-Private Partnership and the upcoming
Partnership on AI, Data and Robotics. The remainder of the book is
then arranged in two parts. The first part "Technologies and
Methods" contains horizontal contributions of technologies and
methods that enable data value chains to be applied in any sector.
The second part "Processes and Applications" details experience
reports and lessons from using big data and data-driven approaches
in processes and applications. Its chapters are co-authored with
industry experts and cover domains including health, law, finance,
retail, manufacturing, mobility, and smart cities. Contributions
emanate from the Big Data Value Public-Private Partnership and the
Big Data Value Association, which have acted as the European data
community's nucleus to bring together businesses with leading
researchers to harness the value of data to benefit society,
business, science, and industry. The book is of interest to two
primary audiences, first, undergraduate and postgraduate students
and researchers in various fields, including big data, data
science, data engineering, and machine learning and AI. Second,
practitioners and industry experts engaged in data-driven systems,
software design and deployment projects who are interested in
employing these advanced methods to address real-world problems.

This new book is an edited volume of essays that examine the legacy
of architecture in a number of African countries soon after
independence. It has its origins in an exhibition and symposium
that focused on architecture as an element in Nordic countries' aid
packages to newly independent states, but the expanded breadth of
the essays includes work on other countries and architects. Drawing
on ethnography, archival research and careful observations of
buildings, remains and people, the case studies seek to connect the
colonial and postcolonial origins of modernist architecture, the
historical processes they underwent, and present use and
habitation. It results from the 2015 seminar and exhibition Forms
of Freedom at the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design
in Oslo, Norway. The exhibition showed how modern Scandinavian
architecture became an essential component of foreign aid to East
Africa in the period 1960-80, and how the ideals of the Nordic
welfare system found expression in a number of construction
projects. The seminar, which built upon the exhibition as well as
on a previous collaboration on the legacies of modernism in Africa
between the Department of Anthropology of the University of Oslo
and the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning from Ghent
University, broadened the geographic scope of the discussion beyond
the Scandinavian context, and set the ground for bringing together
the disciplines of architectural history and social anthropology.
Primary readership will be among architects and architectural
historians, and graduate level architecture and urban studies
students, for whom it will be valuable course material, as well as
those in fields such as African studies and anthropology. It may
also be of interest to those working or researching in public
policy and political history.
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 19th
International Conference on Theory and Applications of
Satisfiability Testing, SAT 2016, held in Bordeaux, France, in July
2016. The 31 regular papers, 5 tool papers presented together with
3 invited talks were carefully reviewed and selected from 70
submissions. The papers address different aspects of SAT, including
complexity, satisfiability solving, satisfiability applications,
satisfiability modulop theory, beyond SAT, quantified Boolean
formula, and dependency QBF.

This volume collects state-of-the-art contributions on the
numerical simulation of fractured porous media, focusing on flow
and geomechanics. First appearing in issues of the International
Journal on Geomathematics, these articles are now conveniently
packaged in one volume. Of particular interest to readers will be
the potential applications of modern numerical methods to the
problem of processes in fractured porous media. This book is ideal
for computational scientists and numerical analysts interested in
recent developments of numerical discretization techniques for
underground flow and geomechanics. Engineers and geologists
studying modern simulation techniques will also find this a
valuable resource.

International languages of management, therapy, marketing and
advertising have their own jargon, specialized terminology and
global standard phrases. In the development discourse,
"sustainability," "rights based," "participatory" are some
frequently used terms. The "right for children to participate" is
among the development concepts that travel from an NGO in a Western
country, to (in this case) youth and project workers in rural
Ethiopia, and back to the donor - seemingly unaffected by the many
local adaptations that the concept has undergone on the way. In the
daily lives of village youth, "children's participation" is not an
abstract universal right but a concrete strategy for managing their
individual lives. The reports from the field to head office do not
capture these local practices, but repeats the idealized, timeless
and depersonalized versions of the concept. This book looks into
some reasons for how and why this might happen. It provides insight
to those interested in the complexities of development work. It
also explores some aspects of transnational communication in an
Ethiopian/Amhara context.

-- Examining the traces left by inhabitants of prehistoric
Illinois, archaeologist Berres finds a society without hierarchy,
whose patterns of daily life were shaped by deeply held religious
beliefs and traditions. Recognizing that symbols on artifacts and
pottery left by the Oneota people reveal much about their
understanding of the world, he challenges commonly held assumptions
about early Native American culture. He finds, for example, that
the Oneota conceived of power as a means of accomplishment rather
than as a way to control others and that the roles of men and women
were well defined but parallel. His findings carry important new
implications for understanding the role of women in Native American
culture.
Berres re-creates the values and cosmologies of the Oneota
communities -- areas too often ignored by archaeologists -- by
closely examining all aspects of Oneota life and death, from food
preparation to burials. His discussion of the thunderbird and
Oneota mortuary practices, in particular, helps to capture the
beliefs in the supernatural that were a vital part of life for
these people. Archaeologists and readers interested in Native
American history and culture will find fresh insights in Power and
Gender in Oneota Culture.
