The Tribe - Portraits of Cuba (Paperback): Carlos Manuel Álvarez The Tribe - Portraits of Cuba (Paperback)
Carlos Manuel Álvarez; Translated by Frank Wynne, Rahul Bery
R391 R319 Discovery Miles 3 190 Save R72 (18%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Teeming with life and compulsively readable, the pieces gathered together in The Tribe aggregate into an extraordinary mosaic of Cuba today. Carlos Manuel Álvarez, one of the most exciting young writers in Latin America, employs the crónica form – a genre unique to Latin American writing that blends reportage, narrative non-fiction, and novelistic forms – to illuminate a particularly turbulent period in Cuban history, from the re-establishment of diplomatic relations with the US, to the death of Fidel Castro, to the convulsions of the San Isidro Movement. Unique, edgy and stylishly written, The Tribe shows a society in flux, featuring sportsmen in exile, artists, nurses, underground musicians and household names, dissident poets, the hidden underclass at a landfill, migrants attempting to make their way across Central America, fugitives escaping the FBI, dealers from the black market, as well as revelers and policemen in the noisy Havana night. It is a major work of reportage by one of Granta’s Best of Young Spanish-Language novelists.

What Is Mine: José Henrique Bortoluci What Is Mine
José Henrique Bortoluci; Translated by Rahul Bery
R325 R264 Discovery Miles 2 640 Save R61 (19%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

In What Is Mine, sociologist José Henrique Bortoluci uses interviews with his father, Didi, to retrace the recent history of Brazil and of his family. From the mid-1960s to the mid-2010s, Didi’s work as a truck driver took him away from home for long stretches at a time as he crisscrossed the country and participated in huge infrastructure projects such as the Trans-Amazonian Highway, a scheme spearheaded by the military dictatorship of the time and undertaken thanks to brutal deforestation. An observer of history, Didi also recounts the toll his work has taken on his health, from a heart attack in middle age to the cancer that defines his retirement, the diagnosis of which opens the book. Weaving the history of a nation with that of a man, Bortoluci explores the similarities between cancer and capitalism – both problems of expansion, both embodiments of ‘the gospel of growth at all costs’ – and traces the distance that class has placed between himself and his father. Inspired and influenced by authors such Annie Ernaux, Svetlana Alexievich and Ocean Vuong, What Is Mine is a moving, thought-provoking and brilliantly constructed examination of the scars we carry with us, as people and as countries.

Giuseppe E. Scarascia-Mugnozza, Vicente Guallart, Fabio Salbitano, Giovanna Ottaviani Aalmo, Stefano Boeri
R4,985 Discovery Miles 49 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This edited volume centers around the concept of BioCities, which aim to unify nature and urban spaces in order to reverse the effects of global climate change and inequity. Following this principle, the authors propose multiple approaches for sustainable city growth. The discussed concepts are not only relevant for newly constructed cities, but offer transformative perspectives for existing settlements as well. Placing nature at the forefront of city planning is not an entirely new concept, so the authors build on established ideas like the garden city, green city, eco-city, or smart city. All chapters aim to highlight aspects to develop a city that is a resilient nature-based socio-ecological system. Many of these concepts were formed in an effort to copy the best traits of a forest ecosystem: a home for many different species that build complex communities. Much like many of our forests, urban areas are managed by humans for multifunctional purposes, using living and abiotic components. This viewpoint helps to understand the potential and limitations of sustainable growth. With these chapters, the authors want to inspire planners, ecologists, urban foresters and decision makers of the future.

Ernesto Antonini, Andrea Boeri, Francesca Giglio
R3,032 Discovery Miles 30 320 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores the relationship between the circular economy and the building technologies within the quintuple helix innovation model. The main question the book answers is whether and how the conversion of sustainable construction processes can be a powerful engine of innovation for the industry. The post-disaster settlements and temporary shelters are assumed as examples of what can be defined as circular buildings in regards to the technical arrangements and features, material and process reversibility, as the social and participative dimensions. Several cases of these interventions are documented and classified by three thematic axes: design, building and living. This highlighted new trajectories for innovation in building technology, consistent with the social, economic and productive dynamics that no longer allows for growing performance by increasing the resource demand. A theoretic framework is traced supporting this vision, which shows how the low technologies can respond to the transition of the economic model from linear to circular. Within this trajectory, the low-tech design for remanufacturing represents a reference framework and a promising tool applicable to the building processes. The enabling technologies and new paradigms for the transition to circular economy emerging from the European research scenario are also mapped, outlining z`the possible future developments in line with open technical and societal challenges.

Soul and Mind in Greek Thought. Psychological Issues in Plato and Aristotle (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Marcelo D Boeri,... Soul and Mind in Greek Thought. Psychological Issues in Plato and Aristotle (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Marcelo D Boeri, Yasuhira Y. Kanayama, Jorge Mittelmann
R3,529 Discovery Miles 35 290 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book offers new insights into the workings of the human soul and the philosophical conception of the mind in Ancient Greece. It collects essays that deal with different but interconnected aspects of that unified picture of our mental life shared by all Ancient philosophers who thought of the soul as an immaterial substance. The papers present theoretical discussions on moral and psychological issues ranging from Socrates to Aristotle, and beyond, in connection with modern psychology. Coverage includes moral learning and the fruitfulness of punishment, human motivation, emotions as psychic phenomena, and more. Some of these topics directly stemmed from the Socratic dialectical experience and its tragic outcome, whereas others found their way through a complex history of refinements, disputes, and internal critique. The contributors present the gradual unfolding of these central themes through a close inspection of the relevant Ancient texts. They deliver a wide-ranging survey of some central and mutually related topics. In the process, readers will learn new approaches to Platonic and Aristotelian psychology and action theory. This book will appeal to graduate students and researchers in Ancient philosophy. Any scholar with a general interest in the history of ideas will also find it a valuable resource.

Comparing Postcolonial Literatures - Dislocations (Hardcover): A Bery, P Murray Comparing Postcolonial Literatures - Dislocations (Hardcover)
A Bery, P Murray
R2,803 Discovery Miles 28 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Bringing together a range of critics working on the hispanic and francophone as well as anglophone post-colonial regions, this book aims to dislocate some of the commonly accepted cultural, linguistic and geographical boundaries that have previously informed post-colonial studies. Collected essays include: cross-cultural comparisons from areas as diverse as Africa, Ireland and Latin America; analysis of specific texts as sites of border conflict; and revisions of post-colonial theoretical frameworks. A timely questioning of the categories of a critical field at the point when it is becoming increasingly comparative, this volume seeks to suggest more dynamic ways of working in post-colonial cultural studies.

It will be of interest to students and researchers of public policy and governance, development studies, sociology, agriculture studies, public health and nutrition and economics.

Pensions: More Information, Less Ideology - Assessing the Long-Term Sustainability of European Pension Systems: Data... Pensions: More Information, Less Ideology - Assessing the Long-Term Sustainability of European Pension Systems: Data Requirements, Analysis and Evaluations (Hardcover, 2001 ed.)
Tito Boeri, Axel Boersch-Supan, Agar Brugiavini, Richard Disney, Arie Kapteyn, …
R2,906 Discovery Miles 29 060 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Europeans are living longer, and fewer now remain in the labour force as they grow older. Many European countries have responded to the ensuing financial pressure by reforming their public pension systems and health care programmes. There is considerable uncertainty as to the effects of these reforms - as they typically do not alter the unfunded nature of public welfare arrangements and this uncertainty is itself costly. Not only does it undermine the credibility of public welfare programmes, but it may also distort labour supply behaviour, decisions regarding savings and capital accumulation. More generally there is uncertainty about the overall impact of ageing on welfare and society and the multiple domains in which its effects may develop. Pensions: More Information, Less Ideology builds on the existing evidence - mostly in the field of public pensions - and highlights the advantages that would be obtained by: harmonising methodologies used in the various countries to report pension outlays and forecast future pension liabilities or more generally public spending; defining common standards as to the frequency of expenditure forecasts and the length of the forecast horizons for welfare expenditures; developing European longitudinal survey of persons pre- and post retirement age, providing timely information on a wide array of decisions by individuals and household related to the ageing process and the ongoing trends.

Theory and Practice in Epicurean Political Philosophy - Security, Justice and Tranquility (Hardcover): Javier Aoiz, Marcelo D... Theory and Practice in Epicurean Political Philosophy - Security, Justice and Tranquility (Hardcover)
Javier Aoiz, Marcelo D Boeri
R2,884 Discovery Miles 28 840 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The opponents of Epicureanism in antiquity, including Cicero, Plutarch and Lactantius, succeeded in establishing a famous cliche: the theoretical and practical disinterest of Epicurus and the Epicureans in political communities. However, this anti-Epicurean literature did not provide considerations of Epicurean political theory or the testimonies about Epicurean lifestyle. The purpose of this book is to shed light on the contribution of Epicurean thought to political life in the ancient world. Incorporating the most up-to-date material, including papyri which have been recovered from Herculaneum, documents of Greek epigraphy and the prosopography of the Roman Epicureans, this volume will bring to the foreground new testimonies surrounding the public activities of the Epicureans. In this way, the reader will learn that Epicurean political theory is, in fact, a crucial ingredient of its philosophy. As a result, this connection creates an ongoing dialogue with the Greek philosophical tradition, revealing the presence of Plato in the Epicurean philosophy.

A Bery

While making cross-cultural comparisons, the book situates works in their specific national, poetic, cultural, and political contexts. In contrast to most postcolonial criticism, particular attention is paid to the language and form of the poems.

Recent research in science establishes a direct relation between human gut and skin. Several species of live microbes inhabit the human skin and intestines which far outnumbers the mammalian cells in the human body. Research interest of Nextgen scientists is focused on beneficially harnessing this microbial population to address skin disorders like acne, rosacea, eczema, premature aging, and skin cancer which are established to be a result of skin-microbiome dysbiosis. This volume highlights evidence-based endeavours of the scientific community in this sector. Currently there is no concrete literature which gives a detailed vision on the relationship between gut microbiota and skin related disorders. This volume is an attempt to put together available data in the area and demonstrate usefulness of probiotics as a new therapeutic option for management of these skin diseases which currently show poor prognosis, high cost of treatment and compromised quality of life of the patient.
